Book Meme
Posted By CarrieK on April 23, 2009
I saw this at IndianaJane’s Bookshelf, and this wouldn’t be a book blog without a book meme, right?
1. To mark your page you: use a bookmark, bend the page corner, leave the book open face down? Use a bookmark, receipt, kleenex (not used!), any scrap of paper will do.
2. Do you lend your books? Yes, often. I love sharing books with fellow book-lovers.
3. You find an interesting passage: you write in your book or NO WRITING IN BOOKS! I write in books often – underlining, notes in margins, etc. Mostly in non-fiction, but sometimes in novels if a passage particularly strikes me.
4. Dust jackets – leave it on or take it off? I usually leave them on, but lately I’ve been reading Leonardo’s Swans, and the cover has a painting of a nude woman on it, and since I have three boys, I’ve taken that dust jacket off.
5. Hard cover, paperback, skip it and get the audio book?
I actually prefer the trade paperback size. I like the flexibility of paper, but they are the size of a hardback. And I love audiobooks, but I don’t buy them – I check them out from the library.
6. Do you shelve your books by subject, author, or size and color of the book spines? I don’t have enough shelves for my books – many of them are in stacks. The kids’ books are shelved, though, but not in any particular order.
7. Buy it or borrow it from the library later?
I do both – more from the library this year, since I made a commitment not to purchase more than 20 books in 2009.
8. Do you put your name on your books – scribble your name in the cover, fancy bookplate, or stamp?
Write it on the front page in the corner.
9. Most of the books you own are rare and out of print books or recent publications?
A mix. I have started a collection of Barnes & Nobles classics.
10. Page edges – deckled or straight?
I like the deckled pages, but I couldn’t honestly tell you why.
11. How many books do you read at one time?
A lot. Right now I’m reading: Leonardo’s Swans by Karen Essex; Speaking with the Angel, a book of short stories edited by Nick Hornby; In Short: A Collection of Brief Creative Nonfiction; Cry of Justice by Jason Pratt; The Intellectual Devotional: American History Edition; The Oxford Book of American Poetry; 100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson (reading aloud to the kids); and Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich (audiobook).
12. Be honest, ever tear a page from a book?
Yes, but only blank endpapers. I once received two books from Barnes and Noble that had weird tar-like smears on the front and back blank endpapers. I was too impatient to read them to send them back for clean copies, so I just ripped out the pages.
Let me know if you decide to play along on your own blog, so I can read your answer.

Most of my answers would mirror yours! Fun meme for a Friday!
Ooh, I don’t do a book blog, but I’d love to try this meme on Ask Me Anything. Do you mind?
Sandy – thanks!
Stephanie – of course, not – I look forward to reading your answers!
For dust jackets and covers I will do the same thing if a little racy. I am with you about the deckled pages. Sometimes if I am on the fence about buying a book, deckled pages could be the deciding factor. Last week I picked up a new thick hardcover and was a little ticked to find the pages were not deckle cut. This was the perfect book for it. Then I caught myself and told me to ‘get a grip’:)
Book Psmith – isn’t it funny how those little things will affect how we perceive a book? I can see myself having the same reaction.
I did it on my blog
So did I.
Hi Carrie,
I have posted this at my place. Great book meme! Love your answers!! Have a great day!!
