The Sunday Salon – April 26, 2009 (The “great-week-in-books” edition)

The Sunday Salon.com

Theoretically, I should have had less time to read this week, since we were back to homeschooling, but I actually fit quite a bit in, and all of it was time well spent. (Click on the book titles below to be taken to my reviews.)

On Monday, I took the kids to the park, and while they played, I read 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff. I loved this little book!

On Friday, I finished Leonardo’s Swans by Karen Essex, which was also very good.

Yesterday, I devoured The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway, which was brilliant and heartbreaking.

I also finished listening to Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich, which was hilarious and fun. That review will be forth-coming.

If I find time to read between church and choir practice today, I will be diving into Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, and listening to Four to Score on audio.

What are you reading this Sunday?

I’m about to start Brideshead Revisted on audio today. I’m taking a 2 hour road trip to see an old friend from high school (reacquainted through Facebook) who is here in Florida on vacation. I’m looking forward to getting four hours of this book under my belt! I’m also very close to finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, a nice non-fiction read for once!

LOVE the Stephanie Plum series. I think I’ve read up to eleven.

84 Charing Cross Road was one of my grandma’s faves.

I am engrossed in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and should finish it very shortly . I’m not sure what I’ll pick up after that.

  4. I’m finishing up The Game by Laurie King, then it’s on to Locked Rooms by the same author. Her new book comes out on Tuesday and I want to have the entire series re-read by then. I think I can manage it if I don’t have too many distractions today.

I’ve always wanted to read 84, Charing Cross Road. I loved the movie!

Yours is the third blog I’ve read in the last 24 hours that has mentioned 84 Charring Cross Road. I think it is a sign!!! I definitely should take it as a sign to get off my butt and watch the DVD someone gave me as a gift over a year ago.

Sandy – I listened to Brideshead on audio – Jeremy Irons does an excellent job!

Andrea – I don’t know if you ever do audiobooks, but the Plum series is hilarious on audio – the actress who reads them does all the voices – her Grandma Mazur makes me laugh so hard!

Kathy – that seems like such a sad book – better pick up something light next. :)

Ruth – I’m on book six in that series- I have a few to go before I’m ready for the new one. They’re wonderful, aren’t they?

Carl – yes, you definitely should!

The Surrendered Single by Laura Doyle.

I haven’t picked up my next book yet but I did finish The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason this weekend.

I love the Take Kids to Park and Read strategy, myself–a homeschooling mom’s sanity-saver! Right now I’m dividing my time between Secret Son, by Laila Lalami and Water Ghosts.

Ashley – I’ve never heard of that one!

Ladytink – I need to try some of her work – I keep seeing her name on blogs everywhere.

Ali – I didn’t know that you were a homeschooler! Cool.

Carrie, I thought the same thing when I popped in and read this post, and then I decided that I probably did know and just forgot, so it was best not to admit to it. Except now I’ve gone and ruined that plan by revealing the truth in a follow-up comment. In any case: yes! My boys have never gone to school.

Colleen Gleason’s 5 Book Gardella Vampire Chronicles series is really fun. Of course I am prejudiced a bit because I am a fan of her work, but I think if you like the paranormal romance genre then you would really enjoy these, and each in the series is better than the last.

Ali – neither have my kids – we’ll be starting our 8th year of homeschooling this fall. What ages are your boys?

Carl – thanks for the tip – I have to admit the Twilight series was my first foray into paranormal romance, but I liked those, so might as well give another series a try.
