I have been so excited to see Duplicity since I first saw the trailers several months ago. You’ve got Clive Owen – who is gorgeous and charming and a terrific actor. You’ve got Julia Roberts, who can play smart comedy well. At the time, I didn’t even know Paul Giamatti was in it, but that would have only added to the appeal. The trailer advertised a comedy of wits between two corporate spies – lots of witty banter and sexy chemistry.
Well, the chemistry was there. There was a bit of witty banter – but I think they showed the funniest parts in the trailer. For a movie that was about spies who are sleeping together and working together – or are they? – the movie was actually pretty slow. There were several times I though that the plot dragged. Of course, getting to look at Clive Own partially made up for it, but I would have been happier to see it on DVD and save some dough.
The funny thing is, the critics have loved this movie. In fact, I think Entertainment Weekly gave it an “A” or “A-” – which is unheard of. I think the movie tried to be more clever and fun than it actually was. I don’t think it was the acting or the script – but better editing could have moved things along and kept me interested.

I just hate it when they show all the best parts of a movie in the trailer!
I’m sorry to hear that the best bits were in the trailer. Too often that is the case. I imagine I’ll check this out from Netflix at some point so as to save spending any money on it.
Sorry that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be!

Kathy – I know, me, too!
Carl – yep, wait and rent it, in my opinion.
Sheri – at least I was out of the house without the kids!

Robert and I both saw the trailer, looked at each other, and said “Netflix” at the same time. I generally trust EW, but sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct, and in this case it was a pass.

Ugh, I hate it when the trailer shows the best parts and there is hardly anything left to discover
