The Sunday Salon – May 3, 2009 (The “April wrap-up” edition)
Posted By CarrieK on May 3, 2009
April was a great reading month – I got a lot of reading done, and loved most of the books I read. Here’s the final list for the month:
Voyager by Diana Gabaldon – audiobook
He Chose the Nails by Max Lucado – I read this aloud to the kids for Lent.
Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
The Laws of Harmony by Judith R. Hendricks (ARC)
In Short: A Collection of Brief Creative Nonfiction edited by Mary Paumier-Jones & Judith Kitchen
Housekeeping vs. the Dirt by Nick Hornby
100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson – read-aloud – my review
Leonardo’s Swans by Karen Essex – my review
The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway – my review
Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich – audiobook – my review
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff – my review
Pretties by Scott Westerfeld – my review
The Last Bridge by Teri Coyne – my review
This week, I also posted a list of my favorite historical fiction.
Last night I finished Specials by Scott Westerfeld. I’ll be reviewing it soon – I’m still processing. I have to admit, I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, but I’m not quite sure how to put it into words yet. And as I’m looking at Extras, it seems to be about completely different characters.
If I find any time to read today, I’ll be finishing up Speak with the Angel, the book of short stories edited by Nick Hornby, starting The Blue Notebook by James Levine, and maybe diving a little further into Tess of the D’Urbervilles.
What are you reading today?

You have been productive! Getting through an Outlander audio alone is reason to celebrate! As you know, I started Yiddish Policemen, ditched it, started Drums of Autumn, then received Beat the Reaper from the library. It is only six discs, so I will listen to that quicly (already through 2 discs) then go back to Drums. I’m also reading Persuasion by Jane Austen, and loving it!
I’m reading 39 Clues to the kids right now. It’s OK, but we are also listening to The Hunger Games in the car, and nothing can compare to that. We are completely blown away. We should finish both this week – stay tuned for reviews!
The new Rick Riordan books, the final one in his Lightning Thief trilogy, comes out this week. Can’t wait!
Loved Housekeeping vs. Dirt and am longing for the new one of his collections of essays.
And I second Hunger Games, though I found it to be very intense…not sure what age child would enjoy it….
You had an awesome month. Way to go.
Sandy – I’ve got to get Hunger Games – I keep hearing about it everywhere! Our library only has the print edition, though.
Debnance – my daughter is going to start the Rick Riordan series – it looks really good.
Beth – thanks!
