Must-See TV on DVD

Kevin and I are totally addicted to our Netflix membership. We only have the very basic cable package – with the major networks, four shopping channels, four religious channels – and Sci-Fi. We’re cheap when it comes what we’ll spend on cable – because we like to watch most TV series on DVD. No commercials, no waiting a week – or month – until the next episode comes out.

Here are some of our must-see TV on DVD series:

Psych: Hilarious USA series about a fake psychic and his sidekick who help the police department solve crimes. Perfectly cast – and great mixture of mystery and comedy. We are very excited that season three comes out next month.

Burn Notice: Another USA series, this one about a CIA agent who has been burned, and so must enlist the help of his ex-IRA girlfriend and a fellow agent to find out who burned him, so that he can get his career back. The voice-overs of the main character are hysterical – and again, the entire cast is perfect. Love it when a cast is truly an ensemble, without a weak link. Plus, he’s fun to look at. :)

Monk: Again with the USA Network – it’s gotten so I’ll give any series they put out a try. Monk is starting its final series soon – and I think it is awesome that they are going out when they’re still in top form. I can’t wait to see how they wrap up the mystery of Monk’s wife’s death.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 comes out in July – and we are dying to see how this top-notch sci fi series ends!

The New Adventures of Old Christine: This sit-com about a divorced mother is so funny it’s snort-inducing. (Not for the kiddies, though, the humor is pretty adult.)

Those are a few of our favorites – what series are we missing out on?

I would love to only have basic cable, but someone in our house MUST have every ESPN station possible!
I love the USA networdk too! I love Psych & Monk and sometimes Burn Notice. Psych is probably my favorite. Old Christine makes me laugh. Have you tried 30 Rock? I also like The Closer.

Stacy – How did I forget The Closer? We love that show! And my husband isn’t a sports fan – I’m the only one who watches football, and only my beloved Seahawks, and most of the games are on Fox, so we’re good. :)

My hubby and son love Burn Notice!

There’s no chance of going down to basic cable in this house! We’d miss Disney, Nickelodeon, BBC America, and all the music and home improvement channels. We don’t spend a lot of money on other entertainment options, so I don’t mind.

TV Shows on DVD are great! We watch a lot of TV but with scheduling conflicts we can’t catch everything the first time around. Summer seems to be the time that we put our Netflix subscription to work catching up on something. This year it is “Bones”. I know there are reruns available on several channels, but I like to watch shows in order.

Kathy – but not you? :) I guess it is more of a guy-type of show, but I like it anyway.

Dani – we used to have satellite, and it took us a while to get used to having less. But I find it’s easier to limit the kids TV time if there are less choices. When we had satellite, they had it on all the time – and it seems like there are episodes of Spongebob on 24/7 on at least one network! We love Bones at our house, too – that’s one series we actually watch as it airs. :)

  6. I wish our cable company offered a more basic cable package than the one they call basic. So many of those channels go to waste. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could pick and choose more discriminately? Anyhow, I really like Netflix too. We’ve had mixed results with their TV show DVDs in terms of them working or being damaged. We often will try out a new show on Netflix that we were curious about and if we like it, end up buying it down the road.

LF – I know – I wish you could order cable a la carte – only pay for the channels you want. We’ve had pretty good luck with Netflix – only a few damaged DVDs over the last few years that we’ve had Netflix. We also have best friends who buy a lot of series on DVD and they loan them to us. :)

YAY for Burn Notice. I’ve watched most of the season one DVD and just purchased season two so I can get through it all in one fell swoop. I really like that I don’t have to wait through an entire week to see the next episode! TV on DVD is a fabulous way to go about it :)

Michelle – I thought season two was even better – it felt like everyone had settled into their characters really well.
