Favorite children’s novels, part two
Posted By CarrieK on July 3, 2009
This is a continuation of my list of our favorite children’s novels:

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke
This adventure story about a dragon, a brownie, and a boy on a mission to save all the dragons from an evil monster was a favorite read-aloud with my kids.

The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo
Another of our favorite read-alouds. Don’t judge by the movie – the book is much, much better.

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
I assigned Number the Stars to Natalie for school reading last year. When she finished it, she handed it to me and said, “Mom, you have to read this.” She was right. This is a historical novel about the Danish resistance during World War II, told from a young girl’s perspective.

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
This novel about friendship and loss is a classic and not to be missed.

Rules by Cynthia Lord
Catherine has taught her younger, autistic brother, David, a list of rules to help him learn how to behave in society. She loves David and her family, but she sometimes wishes that everything didn’t revolve around David and his condition. This is a wonderfully honest, humorous, and heartwarming novel.

Penny From Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm
11-year-old Penny is caught between her two families. The Italian-American side of her family is still grieving the loss of her father – and they blame her mother. Her uncle is living in his car, and her mother has started to date again. She just wants to enjoy her summer – but things are going to change, whether she wants them to or not. This is a wonderful story based on the author’s own Italian-American family. My daughter enjoyed it, too.

Hey girl! I’m back! I doubt I will be going through all the posts I’ve missed since I’ve been gone
. For a certain amount of time while I was gone, I was able to read posts, but when I tried to respond, a virus would invade my nephew-in-law’s computer. Anyway, I was excited to see this post. We loved Number the Starts as an audio, and Emma enjoyed Dragon Rider. I’m going to write these down as future books for us!
Oooh. Some new to me books! I have Dragon Rider on audio, but I haven’t listened yet.
I remember reading Number the Stars as a child and being very moved by it. Such an excellent story.
Sandy – welcome home! You were missed. And I wouldn’t even try to read all the posts you missed – you’ll just start out behind!
Beth – Cornelia Funke has become one of our favorite chidlren’s authors.
Bonnie – yes, it is – I plan on reading it aloud to my boys when we study WW II this year.
Loved Bridge to Terabithia, but I still haven’t seen the movie.
Stacy – the movie was actually very well done and stayed true to the book. After watching the trailers, it seemed they had turned it into some huge fantasy epic, but the trailers were misleading – they kept to the heart of the story. It was one of a few times when I wasn’t disappointed by a book-to-movie adaptation.
These look good. I loved the movie Bridge of Terabithia but have not read the book. I think I would like to
Sheila – you should definitely read it!
