I finished another challenge:
My goal: to read at least 6 graphic novels in 2009 – completed 7/9/2009.
1. Mom’s Cancer by Brian Fies – This is an excellent graphic memoir written by a son about his mother’s fight with cancer.
2. Black: The Birth of Evil by Ted Dekker, adapted by Matt Hansen & Bob Strachan
3. Red: The Heroic Rescue by Ted Dekker, adapted by Matt Hansen & Bob Strachan
4. White: The Great Pursuit by Ted Dekker, adapted by Matt Hansen & Bob Strachan – I loved Ted Dekker’s Circle Trilogy, upon which these graphic novels are based. Again I find that graphic novels based on books just fall flat somehow – they are never as good as the ones that were intended to be graphic novels in the first place. Reading these reminded me of how much I loved the novels, but they definitely shouldn’t be a replacement for the real thing.
5. Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons – Dark and disturbing, but very well done.
6. Blankets by Craig Thompson – Excellent graphic memoir -highly recommended.
7. Plain Janes by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg – I remember I liked this, but I read it all the way back in January, and don’t remember much else about it.
8. American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang – This is part graphic memoir, part imaginative folk tale. Very good.
Other bookish posts this week:
~ Favorite YA fiction, part one
~ Book Review: Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult
~ Book Review: The Book of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark
What are you reading this Sunday?

I have not read any graphic novel in 2009. Must remedy that!

Way to go! I love finishing challenges! Graphic Novels is something I have never touched. I’ve started a small list of ones that have received rave reviews, and then maybe next year I’ll make it my goal to discover them for myself.

Congratulations on finishing the challenge. Graphic novels are just something I really can’t get into. I’ll have to check them out though. I really enjoyed a couple bought for James – Captain Raptor, so maybe, just maybe will enjoy some of these.

Gautami – I’m really hoping to read the new graphic memoir that’s coming out, “The Impostor’s Daughter” – it looks really good!
LF – i was a bit worried about seeing the movie of Watchmen – I wasn’t sure about how bloody it would be, and if I could handle it.
Sandy – Oooo, someone needs to double dare you to read some graphic novels!
Kathy – thanks. I’ve signed up for so many, though, that I still have a ton to go!
Lezlie and Vasilly – thanks!
Robin – you should try the graphic memoir genre, like Persepolis or Blankets or Maus – you might enjoy the fact that they’re true stories.
Congrats on finishing your challenge! I didn’t join in this time around but I do enjoy graphic novels every once in a while. Have not read any of the ones you mentioned here but some of them are on my radar, especially Watchmen.
