This actually happened (Or, my to-read stacks are too big)

I was telling my husband about Brad Meltzer’s hilarious video about his book Book of Lies and the poor reviews it has received. I told him that I thought it was such a gracious way to respond to poor reviews that it made me want to go out and buy the book!

That night, I found the book on one of the to-read stacks next to my bed. I had completely forgotten I owned it!

  1. I’ve accidentally bought multiple copies of a book before. What is even more embarrassing is getting home and discovering you’ve already READ the book you just bought.

That video was hilarious! I think I want to read it too now; I LOVE an author with a sense of humor, especially about bad critiques. Thanks for sharing!

I am not particularly fond of Meltzer’s writing but I agree that he is definitely very gracious about the negative reviews.
As far as your TBR, I have the same problem. At least I used to have. I finally put my books on my iPod app and now when I go to the bookstore and want to get a book I first check if by any chance I already own it.

I keep a book log for that exact same reason. I can look it up and know that I have the book and then try to locate it.

  6. Bwah ha ha ha! I’ve done that, too! I’ve actually bought duplicates a couple of times. Don’t you feel better for telling, now? It’s like BA, bookaholics anonymous, “Hi, my name is Carrie, and I’m a bookaholic.”

    Hi Carrie :-D

I agree, though, the gracious humorous way he’s dealt with the bad reviews is great and makes me want to read it, too. I know he won’t go all Hoffman on me if I don’t like it and write a negative review of it ;-)

That’s pretty good! I loved that youtube video too and it made me want to buy his book. I don’t have that one, but several others of his on my stacks.

Ha,ha… I’ve bought multiple copies of books a few times because my stacks are just overwhelming and I forget what I have! Actually I do keep a list of everything I have but I don’t always carry the list – tsk, tsk.

I saw his video response. Pretty funny. I actually finished the book a few weeks ago, but never got around to writing a review.

Has it gotten negative reviews? That’s kind of sad.

I actually liked the book fairly well (reviewed it in two places, even), though I wasn’t thrilled by the ending. I just felt he reached a little beyond what anyone can plausibly write about, so it wasn’t entirely his “fault.”

By coincidence, I’m reading another of his books now, and to describe it as “suspenseful” is a major understatement.

Perhaps I should add this video to my own reviews of the book, eh? :-)

That is so funny – and yes, it’s happened to me, too! I did read The Book of Lies, and I remember it as being an entertaining read. I thought the Superman angle was interesting.
