What genres don’t you read?

As I have been pondering the fact that I’m running out of genres to use for my favorites posts, I’ve been musing on the genres that I don’t read. I’m a fairly eclectic reader: historical fiction, contemporary fiction, literary fiction, YA fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, history, biography, classics, westerns, graphic novels, mysteries, memoirs – I love them all!

There are a few genres, though, that I don’t read:

~ Self-help books. I can’t stand them.

~ Horror. I’m a chicken.

~ Romance novels. I like novels that include romance, but not romance novels. Make sense?

What about you? Are there any genres that you don’t read?

I’m not much of a fan of sel-help either. Booooring! I’ve also never read a graphic novel in my life, not because I don’t like them, but just because I haven’t! I plan to remedy this at some point. I’ve started a list of them. I’m not a huge fan of romance either, but I’ll read one if someone recommends it!

I can’t read horror, either, and I shy away from romance. For myself, I avoid fantasy, and sci fi most of the time too, but I do read it–and enjoy it–with my kids.

i don’t read erotica, sci-fi, and most fantasy. I’m really picky about my non fiction. I have to be interested in the topic.

Deborah – I don’t read erotica, either – forgot about that genre. I’m also picky about non-fiction – it doesn’t grab me like fiction does.

I used to read a few self-help books during my pre-blogging days, but after I discovered blogging and with all the great recommendations, let’s just say I’m more into fictions nowadays! :) However, I don’t read sci-fi, biography and poetry. Just couldn’t get into them.

I used to say “historical fiction” but then I realized I like historical fiction when it also involves fantasy or mystery (ie another genre I like). I was pretty sure about not liking Westerns, too, until I stumbled on a book review the other day about a western series of mysteries.

I’m much much better at listing what I do like to read :)

I feel the same way about romance ; although, a few times a year, I’ll maybe read one romance if it comes highly recommended!

    I don’t read:
    -self-help
    -politics (except memoirs, biographies, etc.)
    -economics
    -erotica

That’s what’s on my mine for now; I’m an eclectic reader too!

  8. this has given me an idea about updating my book review policy page. I generally don’t read westerns or strictly romance, nor do I read self-help new-agey stuff.

I don’t really read westerns. erotica, poetry or biographies, although I do enjoy the occasional memoir.
I do love a good romance :) The trick is to only read the good ones!

I don’t read erotica, horror, sci-fi, westerns or paranormal. Non fiction has to be something that really interests me but my review policy says I don’t read it because that is not something that I want to review.

Aww I was so getting into this blog too! I am a thriller/horror author…. but the book that I wrote is more about the independent woman who is the main character. Lots of paranormal, lots of ghosts…. But Angela, The main character, gets to kill those who kill people. The ghosts are victims, and they find Angela and Angela finds their murderers.

So it might be scarry or fantastical, but it’s also about a very strong independent women who can certainly take care of herself. :)

    Thanks for the read;

Kerry – Sounds like a fascinating series! Sorry that I’m not a horror fan – but I found that reading stuff that’s scary keeps me up nights. I need my sleep!

  12. Rebecca says:

I, like you, am a pretty eclectic reader but there are some genres I won’t read. Like you, I don’t like romance novels like Harlequin-esque romance novels. And I don’t really read much horror, though I have been known to break that rule. I also don’t read books about vampires and zombies, which might incite a gasp but I really don’t get into it that much. I don’t like cookbooks or foodie type books because I don’t like cooking and because I am just not that into food I guess. I just eat it, I dunno. No culinary bones in me I guess. I will read self-help books, but only that pertain to my medical/health issues (ADD and fibromyalgia). I used to read more but then I realized quickly that so much of it is B.S. Like How to Be a Good Wife, Why You Suck at Romance, 7 Important Steps to Getting a Personality, etc. Give me a break.

Rebecca – No vampires or zombies? Gasp! ;) Just kidding. I never read a vampire book before Twilight – and I enjoyed the series. I also enjoyed The Forest of Hands and Teeth, which is a zombie book, so I guess my tastes have changed a bit. :)

  13. Michelle says:

I’m not at all a non-fiction girl. I read to get away from reality!

Like you I’m not a huge fan of self-help, reference/how-to, I don’t do horror and erotica is yukity yuk yuk for me. I’ve not read westerns as they don’t appeal to me but that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t try it and see if I liked it. Don’t know what would encourage me to do that though with such a large TBR pile filled with what I do like!

I don’t read the same categories, I also don’t read sci-fi, just don’t get it.

However, a couple of years ago I was walking past the romance section of a bookstore and Outlander was there! Yikes! So, with that one exception, I don’t read romance.
