The Sunday Salon – August 2, 2009 (the “July Reading Wrap-up” edition)

The Sunday Salon.com

The first Sunday in August means it’s time to see how my reading for July stacked up.

~White: The Great Pursuit by Matt Hansen, Bob Strachan, and Ted Dekker
~The Book of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark – my review
~Wings by Aprilynne Pike – my review
~The Widow’s Season by Laura Brodie – my review
~The Way Home by George Pelecanos – my review
~The Sister by Poppy Adams – my review
~To the Nines by Janet Evanovich
~Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult – my review
~Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich
~Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman – my review
~Seven Up by Janet Evanovich
~The Actor and the Housewife by Shannon Hale – my review
~Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather – my review

Thirteen books in July. I’m heading into the time of year when my reading slows down, though, as our homeschool year starts on August 31st, and I’ll be doing a lot of lesson-planning in the next few weeks. It was a good month, though, lots of good books, one that was just okay, and some great ones.

Other bookish posts this past week:

~ Interview with Laura Brodie, author of The Widow’s Season. (Note that the giveaway on this post has already ended.)
~ Recommendations from a non-blogger
~ Where my last twenty books came from
~ What genres don’t you read?
~ Book Review: Visions of America: Photographing Democracy by Joseph Sohm

  1. Looks like you had a good reading month, Carrie! I read my usual amount of books in July, which I suppose I should be happy with. LOL We’ll see how I do in August.

That’s a productive month! I read 12 this month, which I think is my record. You’d think I’d read more when the kids are at school, but apparently not. Now explain to me how we are reading like mad fools, and that TBR pile just keeps getting bigger?

Sandy – I know – I had more books come into my house in July than I read – and I only purchased one! They were mostly review copies and a few giveaway wins.

  6. You had a great reading month! As Beth F also noted, you definitely had a nice variety of books, too :-) Hope you have a great August, as well!

Melissa – thanks for stopping by!

  8. Carrie: I have the Cather book on my shelf (has been there for a while). Based on your review, I need to take it off the shelf and read it sometime (maybe in the next year ;) .

As for Pelecanos, I’ve read one or two and he is a bit rough around the edges as I think you mentioned. I always liked The Wire, though, on which he was a writer.

Picoult: I’ve never been interested much in her work myself, but that might be because I don’t have enough estrogen ;-) , although I guess that’s not always a prerequisite as your review shows.
