I was having a hard time coming up with an idea for my Sunday Salon post, and then I saw Rebecca’s post about book covers at Lost in Books, and thought I’d steal borrow her idea.
Of course, she wrote wonderful comments about why she likes each cover, and I often can’t tell you why a certain cover grabs me, while another one doesn’t. I know if the cover contains books, I will almost always be drawn in. Other than that, it’s a hit-and-miss thing – some covers make me want to pick the book up, others turn me off, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. So, no comments, just a collage of covers that I’ve loved from books I’ve read in the past few years.

I am not sure I could pinpoint why certain covers appeal to me more than others either. I think you’ve got a beautiful selection there, Carrie, and can see why they caught your eye.

Wendy – I am amazed at how much a book’s cover will influence me. If I hate a cover, it will take a strong recommendation from a friend or fellow book blogger for me to give it a try.
I just wish I’d love the book “The Thirteenth Tale’ as much as I loved the cover!

Table Talk – you didn’t like it? I thought it was really good, but I have read some mixed reviews.

The Book of Unholy Mischief was in the bin at Borders. Was I wrong to pass it up? I picked it up and messed with it, but didn’t end up getting it. I love all of these covers. I always like the ones with old looking things, especially books or gothic mansions!

Sandy – it was pretty good, especially for the descriptions of Venice and the descriptions of the food. Don’t read on an empty stomach!
I LOVE this post – and I plan to go read Rebecca’s similar post right now! The covers you chose to highlight are so varied – and all captivating (I think The Observations is my favorite).
The cover of a book is so important – in my humble opinion. I am first attracted to the title of a book (because very often the spine of the book is the first part I see), but the cover is a close second. If those two things attract me, then I will read the summary to find out if I might like the story, and finally I will read the first page or so to determine if I will make the purchase.

Sheila – I know – I love covers that immediately make your mind start wondering.
Those covers all look wonderful. The only covers I really ever have a problem with are some of the Harlequin books. Sometimes they can be a bit embarrassing to be holding in public. Although the stories are usually good and I can’t resist.

Yvonne – my sister and I call covers like that “bodice rippers.”
I guess for me a cover isn’t a dealbreaker. Right now I’m reading Agatha Christie books from a mystery collection and they’re all black covers with just a silhouette of a woman supposed to look like Christie on the front of every single one. To me, it’s more what’s inside.

UP – you’re probably the wise one – “don’t judge a book by its cover” and all that.
Wonderful collage!
And it has been a long time I read a bodice ripper!

These are beautiful covers! I think I must add some of these books to my reading list! Thank you for this post!!

I have Interred With their Bones in my TBR stack. My mother loved it and lent it to me.
As for The Thirteenth Tale, you probably know my opinion about that book already. =/ But the cover–and the book itself–is incredible. Total props to the art department for that one!
