I watched Lost in Austen this weekend while Kevin and the kids were away camping. I watched it for the Everything Austen Challenge, and because I’m pretty much a nut for all things Austen.
In Lost in Austen, Jemima Rooper plays Amanda Price, a modern single woman who longs for the romanticism and manners and courtesy – not to mention the man – she finds in her favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice. When Amanda finds Lizzie Bennet coming out of a cupboard in her bathroom – a door that now leads to the Bennet’s home – she gets her chance to live out her favorite novel. Her presence, however, has horrific consequences, as the wrong people end up married and the wrong people are left pining away.
I absolutely loved this mini-series! I watched it all in one sitting – I think it’s about three hours long, but it simply sped by. For one thing, the DVD isn’t split into episodes, so it plays like a feature film. The casting was perfect – and I enjoyed seeing how Amanda’s modern influence changed characters and events from the novel. I’m such a sap – I even cried at the ending. (Tasha assures me I’m not the only one.
)
It isn’t only sappy, though – this movie is full of humor derived from the fact that fashion, customs, pretty much everything is completely different now than it was in Regency England. Rooper has great comedic timing. It was also fun seeing a completely different take on Wickham and Caroline Bingley.
Highly recommended for all fans of Austen and Pride and Prejudice.
(If you haven’t yet watched the BBC/Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice, you should definitely watch that first; certain scenes in Lost in Austen will make much more sense – and be much funnier – that way.)

That Colin Firth P&P is just the most awesome movie ever. I could watch it over and over! I am almost afraid to watch the Kiera Knightly one after that…

Sandy – I actually watched the Keira Knightley version before reading the book or watching the Colin Firth version – and I liked it. Then I read the book and watched the other, and realized that it was really just okay. Not terrible, but not near as good.
Yay! They really are great, aren’t they? I love the part where she makes Darcy go into the pond in his shirt. hahahaha!

This actually happened to be on cable this weekend so I caught it as well. I really enjoyed seeing how a modern girl fit into the old English world. The comedic element of that made it quite entertaining.

I love this movie! It’s one of my favorites. I’ve got it on reserve at the library to watch again for the challenge and I can’t wait. I really need to buy my own copy.
