Watcha Watchin’? Wednesday: Grey’s Anatomy: The Complete Fifth Season

whatyouwatch2Whatcha Watchin’? Wednesday is a weekly feature in which I talk about the TV we’re watching, either on DVD or on cable. Feel free to grab the graphic, join in, and play along – just leave a link to your post in the comments.

greys5There are certain shows that I consider my guilty pleasures – shows that I watch but my husband doesn’t like. Because he won’t watch these shows with me, I watch them on DVD, and so am always a season or two behind the rest of the world. Grey’s Anatomy is one of those shows. My husband refuses to watch – too much drama and relationship stuff, no mystery to solve or bad guys to chase. My best friend got me hooked on it, though, and I’ve been spending the past week catching on up on the doings at Seattle Grace.

Spoiler: my entire review will include spoilers from season five, so if you haven’t watched it yet, you’ll want to skip this.

I knew a lot about what would happen this season, because I read a number of entertainment blogs and news sites, and it was hard to miss all the drama: Will Katherine Heigl stay? Will T.R. Knight stay? What’s with Izzy seeing her dead fiance? I know a lot of people were disappointed in this season, or just the Izzy/Denny storyline, but I am actually loving it! I have four episodes left, and lots of kleenex handy.

I am so glad that the Derek and Meredith on-again-off-again drama seems to be over. I understand all the issues Meredith has in her past with her father and her mother and her mother’s affair with the chief, but at some point a person has to grow up, right? Anyway, they seem to be in a good place now – at least they do four episodes from the end.

Although I’m sure I’m in the minority, I didn’t hate the Izzy/Denny/Alex triangle. Yes, it was a bit weird – but maybe because I already knew the hallucinations were caused by cancer, it just wasn’t that big of a deal. Okay, to be honest, maybe it’s because I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan so much that I’m willing to watch him in pretty much anything.

Another thing I’m really enjoying is the relationship between Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey. I always knew there was more to him than a pretty face and huge libido. Chyler Leigh, the actress who plays Lexie, is a wonderful actress, and especially excellent with the humorous scenes. Her stress-eating because Derek and Mark were fighting was hilarious.

My favorite part of this season, by far, is the relationship between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and the new doctor, Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). I never really thought Cristina and Burke had a lot of chemistry – but oh, Christina and Owen do. have. chemistry.

I do wish that George (T.R. Knight) had more scenes and a better storyline this season, because George is my favorite character. I’m sad that Knight won’t be back next year – but I understand his reason for leaving.

Well, I have four more episodes to go – episodes that I’m sure I will be bawling my way through – what with George dying, and Derek and Meredith getting married (or not?), and Izzy possibly dying of cancer, and Cristina and Hunt not being together because he has PTSD and tried to choke her in his sleep, and …. Okay, now I think it’s probably a good thing my husband doesn’t watch with me. :)

This is a great was to watch a TV series. I haven’t seen Season 5 either because my husband doesn’t like the show. I didn’t mind the spoilers. Actually they made me want to see the dvd’s even more.

  2. Grey’s Anatomy is one of the few shows hubby and I watch during the regular TV season. My husband seems to enjoy it, but I don’t think he’d miss it if we stopped watching. :-) He’s watched the first two episodes of Vampire Diaries with me, but I’m not sure how long that will last–for either of us. His favorite show at the moment is Glee.

I’m with you when it comes to Jeffrey Dean Morgan! Cristina and Owen’s story was one of my favorites in season 5.
