Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers posting lists of the books their kids are reading and loving. I enjoy reading these lists, and thought maybe some of you would enjoy finding out the books my kids have been enjoying lately.
Natalie, age 12

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Shark Girl by Kelly Bingham

Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life by Rachel Renee Russell
Noah, age 11

Alibi Junior High by Greg Logsted

Zamora’s Ultimate Challenge by M.K. Scott

Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel
Jonathan, age 10

Goblins! An UnderEarth Adventure by Royce Buckingham
The Dangerous Days of Daniel X by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge
Josiah, age 7

The Littles Give a Party by John Peterson

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Natalie reads as much as I do, and finds her own books on blogs, through the library, and recommendations I give her. The boys, though, are much harder to please. None of my boys – so far – are pleasure readers. They read during silent reading time with no complaints, but very rarely do they pick up a book outside of that time, except before bed if that’s how they can stay up a bit later. If, after seeing their ages and the books they have enjoyed lately, you have some recommendations, I would welcome them gladly.
Other bookish posts this week:
~ Book Review: Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden
~ Recommendations from a non-blogger #4 – Rod (Dad)
~ Book Review: The Magicians by Lev Grossman
~ Literary Road Trip: Author Lorie Ann Grover
~ Book Review: Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

I’ve got the same thing going on in my house. My daughter is a voracious reader, but I have to work harder at getting a book into my son’s hands. I remember hearing about Zamora’s Ultimate Challenge. Isn’t it about a video game come to life, or something? Now that might trip his trigger!

Sandy – Zamora’s Ultimate Challenge is about two boys who go inside a video game to rescue their sister – definitely a boy-friendly book!
I loved reading this post. It is fun to see what other’s children are reading.
My 10 year old daughter read Dork Diaries recently, she loved the book. My 12 year old daughter is into paranormal type stories so she has read several YA books (which for the most part is fine). She actually has finished the Pretties series of books and loved them so she likes Sci-fi as well.
My 14 year old daughter, she is the most picky. Currently she is reading Cleopatra’s Daughter – the verdict is out for this book until she finishes the read.
I hear you about the boys not being avid readers. My oldest (now 19) was and is still like that. I do not think he will ever get into reading a book on his own. A shame but nothing I can do about it. I love it that my girls are avid readers (some more than others) and my three-old seems to be leaning the way of an avid reader.
I hope you post more in the future of your children’s reads.

Deanna – My 12-year-old read Uglies, too – but she wasn’t enthralled, so she didn’t continue the series. I read them all and enjoyed them, though.
Anya was chewing on the corner of my husband’s new comic books this morning. Does that count as reading? I didn’t think so either. I don’t have children, but it’s always fun to see what they are reading these days. I hope you and your family have a great week, Carrie!

You have Silent Reading Time? Wow. We never had that when I was a kid. ^_^

Tasha – I homeschool my kids, so silent reading time is part of our school schedule.
I love The Littles…I read the first one in the series about 40 years ago…funny to think your little boy is enjoying one of the books all of these years later!

The summer my daugther was 11, I started reading a chapter a day of Little Women to her. I had visions of spending the first part of the summer reveling in a book I loved at the same age and sharing it with Kelsey. Well, after three nights, she couldn’t stand waiting any longer and spent the next two days doing nothing but reading LIttle Women.
But I learned my lesson, I didn’t start Pride and Prejuice this last summer, I’m waiting until school work gets a bit heavier, then she’ll have to wait for me because she won’t have as much time to read on her own.
