The Sunday Salon – October 18, 2009 (the “blog stats” edition)

The Sunday Salon.com

I don’t have an idea for my Sunday Salon post, so thought I’d take a look at some of the recent search terms that have brought people to my blog.

I get a lot of Google queries that are obviously people looking for shortcuts for their reading homework:

Kira-Kira summary
Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson plot
what is the theme of The Hunger Games
book report on The Hunger Games
The Forest of Hands and Teeth chapter by chapter review
intended audience for Extras by Scott Westerfeld

Maybe I’m too cynical, but I can just see the book report questions in those searches: Who is the intended audience for this book? What is the main theme of the book?

To any of you who have found my blog with those searches, I say – “Read the book and do your own homework!”

Other keyword searches:

best children’s novels (look at this post and this one)

Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson (I think this recently became a banned book, so I get a lot of hits on my review.)

How many stars did the book Wings by Aprilynne Pike get? (Depends on the review. Some people loved it, others hated it. I loved it.)

I get the most hits by far, though, from people searching one of these variations:

Should Stephanie Plum be with Ranger or Joe
Ranger or Joe Morelli
Ranger vs. Joe Morelli

These searches land on this page.

Current tally:

Ranger: 10
Joe: 16
Undecided: 3

Well, I suppose that’s enough fun with Google for today. Here are my other more book-related posts this week:

~ Recommendations from a non-blogger #5 – Noah (my 11-year-old)
~ Two perfect books for curious kids and their parents
~ Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon
~ Three more challenges
~ Book Review: The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard

Today, I will be watching the Seahawks game at my parents’ house. If I get any reading time, it will be spent with Fire by Kristin Cashore and The Financial Lives of the Poets by Jess Walter.

What are you reading this Sunday?

I’ve never actually delved into the blog stats for search items. It might be interesting! I just look at the number of hits each day (BTW where was everyone yesterday? Not on my blog!) and sometimes the map where the hits are coming from.

I’m socializing now, but will soon have my Sunday Salon up!

This post made me giggle! I love that you’re telling the kids to do their own homework, hee!

Having said that I’m with you, I totally see all those book report questions in the search strings. LOL

Michelle – I can’t stand the thought that students are missing out on these really good books, and instead letting someone else do the work for them!

  5. I’ve gotten a few obvious searches that are for school assignments. I’m always a little envious of those bloggers who get the really weird search terms that lead to their blogs. Mine always seem too normal. LOL

I hope you have a great week, carrie!

  6. LOL That’s an interesting recap of those searches. Sorry about those Seahawks.
