cloudyI took Noah to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs this afternoon. With four kids, we don’t all go to the movies together very often. Even at our cheap little theater in town, it still costs over $50 for me to take all four kids and get snacks for everyone. About twice a year, I save up for a special movie and take all four – like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Sometimes it bothers me not to have the money to take all of them, but we have started a “Movie Date with Mom” tradition, with the kids taking turns going with me, and it’s become a really fun thing. The kids who don’t get to go don’t complain, because they know their turns are coming. And I get one-on-one time to talk to each child as an individual. Before the movie started, Noah and I were talking about books we’ve currently enjoyed: Silverwing on his part, and Wicked Lovely (the G-rated version) on my part.

Then the movie started, and it was a lot of fun. Noah and I laughed continuously throughout the movie. The animation was visually amazing – and of course, who doesn’t love the idea of giant food? The characters were great, the humor kept us laughing, and it didn’t drag at all. There was also a great lesson about being yourself. Definitely a fun family movie – I can’t wait to watch it with all the kids when it comes out on DVD.

My son loved this book and I wondered how it would turn out as a full length movie (since the book is so short). Glad to see it’s so good.

Kathy – I remember reading the picture book to my kids, too – but don’t remember that much about it, so I have no idea how much they changed/added. I just know we liked it. :)

This looks like a fun movie. I probably will wait until it’s on TV to see it, though.

I think a trip to the movies with each kid sounds like a great tradition!

What a great idea! I didn’t think to take just one kid at a time. You’re so right, the movies is so expensive nowadays. I usually try to keep my Netflix subscription though I haven’t had it lately. I will be using this idea in the future. Thanks!

Vasilly – it works out very well – except when I have to occasionally switch the order – like when New Moon comes in November – I doubt it will be back around to Natalie’s turn yet, but we’ve been waiting a year for it. :)

Carrie, I don’t have children or plan to but that’s a great idea. Even when I see films myself I’m pretty horrified at the cost and cannot imagine taking an entire family who may or may not sit through it/enjoy it. Glad it was good.
