updvdFrom the revolutionary minds of Pixar Animation Studios and the acclaimed director of Monsters, Inc. comes a hilariously uplifting adventure where the sky is no longer the limit.

Carl Fredericksen, a retired balloon salesman, is part rascal, part dreamer who is ready for his last chance at high-flying excitement. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, Carl sets off to the lost world of his childhood dreams. Unbeknownst to Carl, Russell, an overeager 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer who has never ventured beyond his backyard, is in the wrong place at the wrong time – Carl’s front porch! The world’s most unlikely duo reach new heights and meet fantastic friends like Dug, a dog with a special collar that allows him to speak, and Kevin, a rare 13-foot-tall flightless bird. Stuck together in the wilds of the jungle, Carl realizes that sometimes life’s biggest adventures aren’t the ones you set out looking for.

When the kids and I saw UP at the drive-in this summer, all five of us absolutely adored it. Because it is a Pixar film, I wasn’t surprised that it had gorgeous animation, a fully-explored storyline, fun humor, and wonderful characters. What I was surprised by was the fact that the beginning of UP had me in tears. I loved Carl and Ellie’s love story, but it broke my heart.

This movie has everything – it has lots of humor and adventure for the kids, and it has a poignant, amazing story about finding adventure and giving of oneself, of not letting grief define you or keep you from fulfilling your dreams. UP is one of the best animated films I’ve seen in a long time. I hope Pixar keeps giving us movies like this.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 bags of popcorn – and not just for the genre of animated films – it is easily a 5 star movie, no matter the genre.

The kids and I saw this movie in the theaters, and we loved it immensely. I was a little surprised at the adult themes slipped in there, in the beginning, that I didn’t think the kids would understand (fertility issues). Still, it added an important dimension to the plot…the fact that Frederickson and wife only had each other. I loved the talking dogs! Now that the DVD is out, the kids are begging for it.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but it looks great! I love the commercial where the little kid is like, “Can we keep him?” And the grown-up says, “No.” And the little kid says, “But he’s a TALKING DOG!!!!”
