500 daysKevin and I watched (500) Days of Summer last night and I absolutely adored it. Kevin liked it, too, which is saying something for a romantic comedy. Of course, this romantic comedy doesn’t follow the typical formula – in fact, the narrator tells us at the beginning, “This isn’t a romance.” It is, however, romantic, and smile-inducing.

Tom has always believed that “The One” is out there, just waiting to be found. When he meets Summer, he knows he has found her – in spite of the fact that Summer tells him that she doesn’t believe in love and that she just wants to keep things casual. Tom and Summer embark on a relationship, and Tom falls head over heels. The story is told out of order, with Day 1 being the first day they meet – and the movie keeps flipping forward and backward, giving us pieces of their relationship.

My husband enjoyed the fact that it was told from the perspective of a guy – and showed what it was like for a guy when a girl gives him the “just friends” speech. I loved the casting; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most promising young actors – and my new crush, even though I’m 10 years older than him. Who’d have thought the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun would turn out to be so incredibly brilliant? And Zooey Deschanel is also wonderful as Summer, the embodiment of Tom’s romantic dreams.

This is truly a must-see film – if only for the dance scene to “You Make My Dreams Come True.” The first thing I did this morning was find that scene on YouTube and watch it again.

Even though my movie critic sister scoffs at this movie, overall everyone is talking about htis movie as one of their favorites of the year. I’ve even seen it mentioned in the same sentence as Oscars. I must see it!

Sandy – I don’t know if i would say it’s worthy of Best Picture, but it was certainly a great way to spend the evening!

My son and I went to see this last summer and I liked it a lot more than he did. We’re both big fans of Zooey Deschanel.

Wendy – I had kind of avoided it, too – but then so many people were saying it was their favorite movie of the year – I had to see what all the fuss was about.
