Monday’s Movie Review – The Answer Man
Posted By CarrieK on January 11, 2010
Arlen Faber is the reclusive author of “Me and God,” a book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. Arlen’s life collides with Elizabeth, a single mom raising her seven year-old son, and Kris, a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning. Both Elizabeth and Kris are hopeful that Arlen has the answers, but the truth is, he hasn’t got a clue. (description courtesy of Yahoo Movies)
I wanted to watch The Answer Man simply because it stars Lauren Graham, whom I have adored since Gilmore Girls. I also like Jeff Daniels – when he’s doing a serious role. (I’ve never been a fan of the Dumb and Dumber genre of movie.) I know The Answer Man didn’t get great reviews – but I’ve never listened to reviews of movies. Sometimes they’re dead on, and other times I think, “Did they even see the same film?”
And here’s another instance of the critics being lukewarm about a movie that I ended up loving. This is a smart, romantic movie – equal parts comedy and drama. Lauren Graham and Jeff Daniels are brilliantly cast, and the little boy who plays Lauren Graham’s son is perfect. The only thing that could have made it any better is if they had toned down the use of the f-word a bit – because I think my mom would really like it, but the language will probably put her off.

Thanks for mentioning this. I had wanted to see it, but had totally forgotten to add to my Netflix queue. There is also a Watch It Now option–maybe I’ll do that this weekend.

Stacy – you’re welcome.
I just watched this the other day! I agree. I loved this movie too. I watched mostly to see Lauren Graham, and I was interested to see what Jeff Daniels character would be like. I really liked how he started giving out advice to the recovering kid. Oh, and his collection of toys made me laugh.
Sharla – It was just good all around, wasn’t it?
