Whatcha Watchin’ Wednesday – Bonekickers
Posted By CarrieK on January 13, 2010
Whatcha Watchin’? Wednesday is a weekly feature in which I talk about the TV we’re watching, either on DVD or on cable. Feel free to grab the graphic, join in, and play along – just leave a link to your post in the comments.
Past and present meet with explosive results in this British drama series called a “bit of Doctor Who fantasy, hints of a Da Vinci Code riddle, and even elements of CSI” (The Times, U.K.). Led by the fiery Dr. Gillian Magwilde (Julie Graham, At Home with the Braithwaites), an intrepid team of archaeologists finds mud, blood, and death-defying adventure when they start digging.
Set in the beautiful ancient city of Bath, the series blends modern forensics with historical mysteries for exciting entertainment. The top-notch cast includes Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill, Iris), Adrian Lester (Primary Colors, Hustle), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Doctor Who), and Michael Maloney (The Forsyte Saga), with guest stars Eammon Walker (Oz) and Burn Gorman (Torchwood).
Bonekickers is a thoroughly entertaining series with a wonderful cast. I had to talk Kevin into watching it with me, because as soon as he hears “BBC,” he assumes I’m talking about a Jane Austen costume drama. But this series is full of action, history, and intrigue. I enjoy the dynamic among the team of archaeologistis, and having the new girl, Vivian, come in as an outsider allows for us to learn the background of the characters along with her.
While some of the cases stretch the bounds of historical believability a bit, it’s all in good fun, and each episode is vastly entertaining. We still have one episode to go, and I’m interested to see how Dr. Gillian reacts to the secret revealed to her in the previous episode.
If you like action television with a bit of history and detective work mixed in, don’t miss Bonekickers.
Bonekickers will be available on DVD on January 26th. The DVD special features include behind-the-scenes segments for each episode.
Disclosure: Bonekickers was sent to me by Acorn Media for the purpose of review.

This series sounds like something hubbe and me might enjoy =D Thanks for the review, CarrieK!

Ladybug – you’re welcome – I hope you like it!
Huh. I’ve never heard of this, but it’s right up my alley. I’ll have to see if Netflix has it. After several people telling me how great the show is, I finally watched the first couple episodes of Glee. I was surprised by how much I really liked it. It’s a bit quirky, which put Mags off, but quirky is one of my favorite qualities in a show.

This sounds like a great series to watch on DVD! When my two older kids became teenagers, we started watching series on DVD and this one sounds perfect for us, especially this part: ““bit of Doctor Who fantasy, hints of a Da Vinci Code riddle, and even elements of CSI”.
Belle – You should definitely give it a try, then!
I missed this series when it was on TV.
