Adventures in Audio is a semi-regular feature in which I talk about the audiobooks I am currently listening to. If you are an audiobook listener and you would like to join in, feel free to link to your post in the comments.
The Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen is a historical novel set in the town of Commonwealth in Washington State. The year is 1918; World War I is raging and the Spanish Flu is decimating towns all over the United States. Commonwealth’s town council decides to take the radical step of quarantining their town – not because they have the flu, but because they want to keep the flu out.
When I started listening to this book, I was delighted to hear a familiar voice. The narrator is Henry Strozier, who also read Pete Hamill’s North River. When you find an audiobook narrator whose voice you enjoy, finding another book read by them is like being greeted by an old friend. So far, this book is a wonderful piece of historical fiction, dealing with not only the war and the flu, but labor and union issues. I’ve only finished 4 of the 13 discs, so still have a lot to go.
An Echo in the Bone is the seventh volume in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. It’s massively long – 40 discs. I’ve finished five. So far, I’m not loving it. I love the Jamie and Claire and Roger and Brianna sections, but so far, William Grey hasn’t grabbed me as a character, and she’s spending a lot of time with him. Maybe he will grow on me. I won’t give up, though – I’ve invested thousands of pages and dozens of hours on this series!
Any audiobooks tickling your ears these days?

Forty discs?!?! That’s crazy!! I’m not a big fan of Gabaldon. Outlander was good, but the second book did nothing for me. Since then, I haven’t been inspired to read the third book.

Stephanie – I know that some books are a bigger hit with me than others, but I love the characters and enjoy her writing. She’s not for everyone, though – I know some people who hate her books!
I like historical novels. The Last town on earth sounds like a great read. Thanks for mentioning it.

Andreea – you’re welcome.
I’m listening to Long Lost by Harlan Coben, and I’m really enjoying Steven Weber’s narration.

Kathy – I’m going to see if my library has that one – I like Steven Weber, too.
I read Last Town on audio and wasn’t a huge fan (because of the plot, not the reader). I’ll be interested to hear your final thoughts.
I just finished Little Children (read by George Wilson) and it was really good. Also Great Expectations, read by Frank Muller, was excellent. I enjoy almost anything he reads.

Melissa – I’m finding the plot a bit slow, but still enjoying it so far. Not even halfway, though. Did you review it? I’ll have to look for your review after I finish and write mine.

I am a big Gabaldon fan, have read the whole series and loved it. Having said that, I couldn’t get into William in Echo either. But then, something happened that made him a lot more interesting to me. Hang in there!

Wendy – I think I just reached that part – but then it cut back to Claire and Jamie. Interested to see what happens next.
I’ve been wanting to read The Last Town on Earth for awhile now. I think I should really put it on my holds list. A few hours ago I finished listening to The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It’s a perfect audio book.

Vasilly – I really want to listen to The Help on audio – my library has it available for download, but there’s a long hold list!
The Last Town on Earth sounds like something I might like. I am glad you enjoyed it, Carrie.
I imagine a good narrator can make or break a book sometimes. I don’t do audio books–but am not closed to the idea–just haven’t found a niche for them yet in my life. One of these days I will though–I’m determined to give them another try.

Wendy – the narrator can either make or break an audiobook, that’s for sure!
