The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli
Darrow turned his back on the safety of the rear position, on Helen, on thoughts of Saigon and possibly America; his whole attention directed toward the depth of the marsh, and the further depth of the jungle, the war, the secrets he still had not found. Not yet understanding what drove him, she already respected it.

Admission by Jean Hanff Korelitz
“Still, the faculty are right,” Helen said with annoyance. “A university is first and foremost a place of learning. Not table tennis or refugee work, however noble that may be. Princeton should be an academic meritocracy, like Oxford. That is the only criterion that matters.”

I’ve seen some good reviews for Admission, and I’m intrigued! Not sure if this is the best or worst time to read it though – the twins are juniors and gearing up for the whole college search process.

Admission and Lotus Eaters both look interesting, but I gave up on the Gabaldron series a few years ago.

Raidergirl – I know a lot of people gave up on the series – it is very long.
I loved Admission – my daughter just graduated from one of the Ivies and this book rang so true to what I imagined it was like for the ones in control of those big decidions. Plot, characters all excellent, and good writing toq.

Susieface – I’m really enjoying it so far.
Such a variety! I do hope you enjoyed The Lotus Eaters, Carrie (I keep typing Lotus Readers for some reason). Your description of the book Admission took me back to the day I met with an admission’s counselor at the university I really wanted to get into. She was such a nice woman and made me feel at ease right away.
