On the way, I drove carefully, wearing a little maternity interview suit Mackie had mail-ordered, and it’s so funny to think back on that morning now, my five-months-pregnant, grumpy self in my pointy shoes and stockings with my hair tamped down in a little bun, trying so hard to make a change in my life. Taking yourself that seriously is sometimes just begging for a pie in the face.
