After two nights sleeping in my own bed, I am starting to feel more human again, more like myself. I’ve also gotten through two nights of giving Natalie her evening IV antibiotics and then starting her on the IV nutrients (they run all night) without screwing anything up, which is a huge relief. Natalie is handling things well. Nothing-to-eat-but-clear-liquids is still her most hated phrase in the English language, but the IV nutrients tamp down her hunger response, so it’s more a psychological desire for food than anything else. I am continually amazed by her grace and positive attitude during all of this – she makes me very proud.
I didn’t get as much reading done in the hospital this time, but I did have some books that helped pass the time. I listened to – and finished – the audiobook edition of Fragile by Lisa Unger. It was a great book for those nights when I just couldn’t sleep and it was too dark to read a print book. My review will be coming soon for a tour date – the 24th, I think.
I was also reading two books n print. I’m reading Godric by Frederick Beuchner for a Faith ‘n’ Fiction Round Table Discussion, and I have decidedly mixed feelings about it. Actually, now that I think about it, they’re not really that mixed: I don’t like it. But it’s short, so I will finish it today, and am looking forward to hearing what the rest of the participants thought.
I’m also almost finished with Christine Falls by Benjamin Black, and loving it. It’s the first in a series and I will definitely be continuing to read about pathologist Quirke Griffin, a wonderfully damaged character.
If I have any time to read today after finishing those two, I will start Laura Lippman’s I’d Know You Anywhere. What are you reading today?

I LOVE Quirk, and both of those books (I think there are only two so far). Great writing, and great damanged characters. God bless you guys, and your patience in dealing with all of Natalie’s issues. Hope she is able to stay home now for a long time.

Sandy – I hope she gets to stay home for a long time now, too! And I have Silver Swan on my computer on audio – read by Timothy Dalton – hoping to listen to it soon – after Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Glad to hear you all are home and doing relatively well! I’ve been meaning to read Christine Falls for years, so I’m thrilled to hear you’re enjoying it. I have I’d Know You Anywhere coming up soon too for a book tour, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m glad to know you’re still able to find some solace in reading in the midst of Natalie’s medical problems. I imagine not being able to read would make it that much more challenging to endure. I’ll continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Carrie – thanks for the prayers! I’m reading the Lippman for a tour, too.
I’m sure it feels good to be back home. I’m always amazed at how well kids handle things that I could never deal with. I’m proud of Natalie – and you. Don’t forget to take care of yourself in the midst of all of this.

Kathy – thanks. I have a lot of wonderful friends in my life that are making sure I get taken care of, too.
I am glad you are home and that everyone is doing relatively well. I know this can’t be easy on anyone, especially Natalie. She sounds like such a trooper.
Christine Falls is one I want to read and so it’s good to hear you are enjoying it. I look forward to your thoughts on Lippman’s book–I have that one here to read too.
Have a great week, Carrie!

Wendy – I really liked Lippman’s What the Dead Know, so I’m hoping this one is just as good.
Glad to hear that things are going well now that you are home. Your daughter’s grace under pressure is an inspiration. I’m so sorry that she and your family have to bear this burden. I’m glad that you were able to find time to read and some comfort in doing so.

Ditto what everyone else has said about your daughter.
As for Godric, I didn’t like it when I started it because of the way it was written, but once I got going, I really enjoyed it. Will be interesting to hear everyone else’s thoughts.

So glad to hear that she’s home and doing well. Hang in there. I know this must be so hard. One of my dear friends has Crohn’s and so I’ve seen how hard it can be on a person. Continue to send well wishes so she’ll feel better soon!
