Read-a-thon Time

Tomorrow morning begins Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon. Technically, I’m supposed to start at 5:00 a.m., since I’m in the Pacific Time Zone, but I’m having a movie night at my best friend’s house tonight, and I won’t be home until late. So, I’m fairly sure I won’t be able to read the whole 24 hours, but I’m going to give it as many hours as I can.

I’m in the middle of two books right now (The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi and Lord of the Rams by Ronan Smith), but they’re not really the type of books I want for the read-a-thon. I plan to give a bit of time to them, but I’m also going to read Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby and Room by Emma Donoghue. I’m also currently listening to two books on audio, so any cooking, dishes, or driving time will be accompanied by Die for You by Lisa Unger and The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume I: The Pox Party by M.T. Anderson.

I’m not sure how much I will be doing blog updates or participating in mini-challenges, because I really want to read, but I may do some blog-hopping when I need a break.

Are you participating? What’s on your reading list?

Happy Reading! I’m curious to know what you think of Room. It’s not on my reading list for today but hopefully sometime in the near future.

    (Non)traditional Buddhist readathon blessing:

Just as the books fill the shelves,
Pile together on the floor and stack up on the table
So may the joy of the readathon
Flow forth to brighten your day and lift your spirit.
Books already read, books in progress and books yet to be read.

By the power of every word on the page
    May your book be delightful,
    As scary as Lovecraft’s Cthulhu
Or as sweet as a box of See’s candy.

Let the power of the images evoked by words
Keep you stay awake long through the night
    May no obstacle impede
    Your day filled with books.

For all of those who are reading today
Who follow in the path of Dewey
May your day be filled with the four blessings
Of fabulous books, tasty snacks, comfy chairs and joy.

Did you make your 5am wake up call?

Sounds like you have a fantastic slate of books ready for the day. I’m through my first book (which I started last night) and am moving into book two when hour four starts up.

    Enjoy!

Michelle – not even close to 5 a.m.! Woke up not feeling very well so opted for more sleep. Didn’t start reading until 11:00 am- but read Room, which was amazing.

    Don’t let the momentum stop
    And get some reading done!

PS–I envy you and your 5 am reading time, even if you’re starting a bit late. Have a great day!!

A thought to mull over: “The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts.” — John Greenleaf Whittier

    Enjoy your reading!
