A bit of explanation for my post sub-title: every February, Kevin and I take a weekend away from the kids, and next weekend is it. The boys will be spending the weekend at Michelle’s; Natalie with her best friend, Caitie. We will spend Friday night in Spokane: good food, trip to Barnes & Noble, stay at Oxford Suites. The second night we will be at home in order to save money, but the whole entire weekend will be kid-free. For a mom who homeschools and a dad who works from home ninety percent of the time, these weekends are soooooooo important. We need the time to reconnect with ourselves as adults and as a couple, time to not be “Mom” and “Dad.”
But, before we get to drop our kids off Friday morning and ride off into the weekend, there is a busy week to get through. The kids’ have started their second semester enrichment classes, which means I’m back to playing chauffeur and cramming the important stuff – like math, science, grammar, and history – in between the fun stuff. All of the kids are taking P.E. and the science lab class: this semester they are studying aeronautics. Natalie is taking voice and acrylic painting. Noah is also taking guitar lessons and a two-hour cinematography class that he is especially excited about: they purchased green-screen technology, and over the 14 weeks of the semester, they will write, direct, film, and edit a short film. Noah is the assistant editor. Jonathan is also taking acrylics with Nan.
In the midst of all that school stuff, I also have a hair appointment and Nan has an orthodontist appointment. Plus, grocery shopping, laundry, housework, cooking – the stuff that always has to be done. So, you can understand why I’m hoping Friday will come very quickly!
Today will be spent doing laundry and some homeschool prep. I do plan to grab some reading time, though, and it will be spent with Villette, Outside In by Maria V. Snyder, and the Wendell Berry essay collection Art of the Commonplace What are you reading today?

This sounds like a fun weekend coming up!
I am hoping to clean up a few books today that I have a book mark in…. this morning after church should be pretty quiet and should stay that way through the evening so I am hoping on some reading, some pre cooking for the week, and a little house cleaning.

Sheila – glad to hear I’m not the only one who has multiple books in progress! I can’t seem to limit myself to just one (or two, or three) at a time.
This week will drag and next weekend will fly by! It sounds like you have a lot going on!

Kathy – I know, isn’t that the way it always goes? When you want time to go fast, it doesn’t; but it flies when you want it to last.

Glad you’ll be able to get some time away here soon.
I don’t know what I’ll be reading today after finishing Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand late last night. The book was so amazing that anything I read after this is going to be a letdown, I have a feeling. I might just veg on the couch and watch a marathon of one kind or another on Netflix.

Bryan – I’ve heard such great things about Unbroken – can’t wait to read it!
I’m starting Stitches, I Is An Other, and Any Human Heart today. Your next weekend sounds like fun, but it will surely go by too fast.
That film class sounds amazing! I wish I would have had an opportunity like that when I was in high school.

Ash – the amazing thing is, he’s only in 6th grade! Because it’s an enrichment class for homeschoolers, it has students from grade 5 through 12th all working together.

Have a great kid-free weekend. I don’t know how couples who don’t make kid-free time survive, as you so need some time to be a couple. Big Wendell Berry fan, though I’ve mostly read his fiction.

Robyn – Berry’s essays are amazing, and make me think – not easy reading, but worthwhile. His poetry is beautiful, too.
Sounds like you’re going to have a blast, if you get through this week. Enjoy.
