Today’s topic for Audiobook Week is a meme:
Current/most recent audiobook: I’m on the last two-thirds of The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, narrated by William Hope and Lauren Lefkow. This is a reread for me, and yet I’m still so hooked, I’m finding it hard to want to do anything that precludes listening!
Impressions: Love, love, love it!
Current favorite audiobook: Ooo, that’s tough. Though the one audiobook that has most often popped into my head when asked for my favorite is Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, narrated by Kristoffer Tabori.
One narrator who always makes you choose audio over print: Lorelei King, who narrates the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, has become Stephanie in my mind, and I could never go back to reading the books. I was privileged to interview Lorelei last year during Audiobook Week.
Genre you most often choose to listen to: I’m pretty much across the board with genre, but I think contemporary fiction wins out by a small margin.
If given the choice, you will always choose audio when: It’s read by a narrator I love: Simon Vance, Davina Porter, Cassandra Campbell, Kimberly Farr, Lorelei King, George Guidall.
If given the choice, you will always choose print when: I’m going to steal Jen’s answer – if the book jumps back and forth in time lines, I find it difficult to orient myself in the book. That’s why I couldn’t listen to Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad. I’m not having any problem with the time jumps in The Time Traveler’s Wife, though – probably because it’s a reread.

I have been wanting to start the Stephanie Plum series for a while now – never thought to listen to it…might have to check that out!

Kristin – they are best that way, in my opinion!
I was actually going to ask about the time jumps in Time Traveler’s Wife. I’d love to listen to it, but I might need to reread the print first, because it has been a really long time.

Jen – it’s been a few years since I read Time Traveler’s Wife, and I’m not having any trouble. Each section is headed with the date, plus the age Henry is and the age Clare is, so it helps.
I laugh myself silly while reading Stephanie Plum, I bet it would be funnier having someone read it to me.

You’ve listed all my favorite narrators! After reading reviews for A Visit From the Goon Squad, I think that would be a difficult book to follow on audio.

JoAnn – I’d still like to give Goon Squad a try in print someday, but I couldn’t follow the time jumps.

I loved your interview with Lorelei King! It made me give the Stephanie Plum mysteries a try. Maybe I need to try The Time Traveler’s Wife on audio.
I couldn’t really get into it when I tried it in print.

I have not read The Time Travelers Wife even though the book glares at me from the shelf it was placed on a long time ago… maybe audio is the answer with this one.

Sheila – it really is worth it – I finished listening today, bawling like a baby.
Oh, I love The Time Traveler’s Wife; it made me cry so hard – weird that I loved it so then, right.
I was thinking of reading Middlesex at some point this summer. Maybe I should listen to it instead.
I am with you; Davina Porter is fantastic. When I re-read the Outlander books, I read them once, and then the next time I listen to Davina. Although, I have not made that full rotation yet, but I am getting there.
If memory serves me correctly; you (your blog) introduced me to Outlander and they quickly became my favorite series of books, and my favorite author.

Ibeeg – I’m so glad you’re loving the Outlander series! And yes, you should definitely listen to Middlesex. It’s a bit long, but if you can handle an Outlander audiobook, you can handle anything!
Sounds like that Stephanie Plum series is worth the listen… I am also another lagger having not yet read the TTW..

I LOVED Jeffrey Eugenides’ MIDDLESEX on audio. Kristoffer Tabori was the absolute perfect narrator for that story.
