Today’s discussion topic for Audiobook Week is “Audiobooks for the uninitiated: Whether you just started listening or have a long history with audiobooks, you probably have some suggestions for those new to audio whether for narrators, titles, or ways to experience the medium. Write a post, make a list, get creative.”
Everyone has different opinions on what works with audiobooks. If you want to give audio a try, here’s my advice, for what it’s worth:
~ Start simple. Don’t go for a heavy Russian classic or a thick epic with tons of characters. Go for a comfort read, like a cozy mystery. Audio is also a great way to reread a favorite book, and that gives you a way to ease into audio with a book you’re already familiar with.
~ Go for funny. I love listening to an audiobook that makes me laugh. Try the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, Going Bovine by Libba Bray, or Slam by Nick Hornby.
~ Don’t be afraid to give up on an audiobook if the narrator doesn’t ring your bell, even if other bloggers rave about that particular reader. The narrator can make or break an audiobook, and can also make or break your audiobook experience.

Great recommendations. I started with mysteries, chick lit and funny memoirs (like Sedaris), now I love listening to nonfiction and classics. I agree it’s good to start with lighter stuff.
