August Read-along: All Clear by Connie Willis

With our read-along of Blackout wrapping up this weekend, Avis and I have both already finished the book and decided we must have a read-along of the sequel in August. I hope that those of you who have read Blackout with us – as well as anyone else who already had – will want to join in.

All Clear concludes the story of the three historians sent back to World War II.

All Clear is only available in hardcover or e-book form, and again, the chapters aren’t numbered. Here is a reading schedule based on the page numbers in the hardcover, with hints of where to stop for those reading on an e-reader. We’ll read approximately one-sixth of the book each week. Since the first of August is on a Monday, the first week is really only five days, so that week’s selection is shorter.

Section one – August 1st through 5th (post to go up on the 6th): pages 1-123 (stop when you get to the chapter headed with this quote: “Don’t leave it to others.”)

Section two – August 6th through 12th (post to go up on the 13th): pages 124-300 (stop when you get to the chapter headed with this quote: “That won’t be there in the morning.”)

Section three – August 13th through 19th (post to go up on the 20th): pages 301-470 (stop when you get to the chapter headed with this quote: “Just waiting, waiting, waiting till your number came up…”)

Section four – August 20th through 26th (post to go up on the 27th): pages 471-641 (the end)

I haven’t read this one and I’m tempted. But so far this year I’ve been a TOTAL failure at readalongs….

I have to admit, I abandoned the read-along when I missed the end of the third section (it’s hard to catch in audio!). I tore on ahead and finished Blackout, and went on to All Clear :-). I can’t even imagine having the self control to stretch that one out :-).

Enjoy All Clear, I certainly did!

Laura – I have a feeling I may have to just tear through it, stopping to write my discussion posts before I go on. I can’t remember the last time I stretched a book out over six weeks!

  3. Well, if it’s just the two of us, it might make sense to reassess our schedule, if we’re both just going to tear through the book! (Also, my copy is due before the end of our read-along, so I wouldn’t mind finishing it before the due date!)

I’m just starting All Clear. Due to a sudden work schedule change (ie more work plus travel) I don’t have as much time as I thought I would for reading… so I’m a few weeks behind.
