The Sunday Salon – October 2, 2011 (the “September reading wrap-up” edition)

The 2nd of October! September has flown by in a whirlwind of school, church, and family activities. I love this time of year; the mornings are cool and crisp, the afternoons sunny. We’re in the middle of my favorite season, and I plan to relish every moment of it before winter sets in.

This afternoon, I am finally going to get the opportunity to see the film version of The Help – and I can’t wait! The book was one of my top reads last year, and I have been so excited to read the reviews from people who’ve read the book and say that they didn’t screw it up. :)

If I do find time to read, these are the books that will be occupying my time:

On audio:
~ In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin by Erik Larson
~ Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy

In print:
~ The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley
~ Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
~ A Passage to India by E.M. Forster

haha, Carrie, you have a very good start on October considering it only started yesterday. :) I think you probably mean September.

I hope October is actually a really good reading month for you!

  2. Oooh, I look forward to hearing what you think of Larson’s book. I wanted to read Devil in the White City and just never have gotten around to it. While his latest is probably another one I’ll probably “never get around to,” I’d stick like to know if it’s any good — so I’ll know what I’m missing. ;)

I also was glad to see your mini-review of The Sherlockian. I was very curious about that one too, but I still want to delve a bit deeper into the “real” Sherlock Holmes first.

Bryan – the Larson starts out a bit slow, with lots of background material, but Alyce at At Home with Books said that once you get past that (and it’s necessary info), then it picks up its pace. I haven’t quite reached that point yet, but am sticking in there.

I read some of the Laurie R. King Holmes/Russell series before I ever read any Conan Doyle. After about book four or five, I stopped and read The Complete Holmes, books 1 and 2 – and loved the, of course. I then finished the King series – except the new one, which is waiting on my computer in e-galley form. The Sherlockian was excellent, too – and while it completely stands alone, I can see it making a good series, too.

  3. My favorite time of year too! Taking a breather myself today. A friend and i are going to see The Help. Sweetums is NOT happy. I think she’ll live. Thanks for your prayers! HUG.

  4. Oh, you read some great books in September. I, too, read The Leftovers this past month…and I started rereading The Handmaid’s Tale. I set it aside, though, for review books, etc.

I love fall, too! My favorite season.

Laurel – I know about setting books aside! I am almost completely done with all review commitments – my goal is to read nothing but “me” books in December. :)

The Help is great – you will be pleased. I had my hand on the Erik Larson book, then put it back because I do want to listen to the audio (LOVED Devil in the White City). My library didn’t have it a few weeks ago, I’m going to check again…
