Mini-reviews: Forever by Maggie Stiefvater; Fables by Bill Willingham; and Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Title: Forever
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Genre: YA paranormal fiction
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Source: Audiobook from the public library
Audiobook reader: Jenna Lamia, Pierce Cravens, Dan Bittner, Emma Galvin, Maggie Stiefvater
First line: I can be so, so quiet.

I love this series on audio. The readers for the four main characters were perfect. The resolution of this series was a bit ambiguous, but I think I know where the author was going, and I’m choosing to believe in the ending I wanted. :) And I really enjoyed the way the characters of Cole and Isabel were developed, the way their relationship unfolded. In fact, I’d love to see a spin-off series focusing on the two of them.

Title: Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile
Author: Bill Willingham
Genre: Graphic novel
Publisher: DC Comics
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Source: Print copy from my personal library
First line: Once upon a time.

What a fun premise for a series! Fable characters have come to live in the mundane world after their homelands were taken over by a mysterious enemy. In this first volume, Snow White, who runs things, must depend on Bigby Wolf, her chief detective, to solve the murder of her sister, Rose Red. Great art, too, even if the women do embody the comic-book idea of perfection – tiny waists, huge boobs. Definitely not one for the kiddies, but a lot of fun anyway.

Title: Beautiful Chaos
Author: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Genre: YA paranormal fiction
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Source: Print copy from my personal library
First line: I was standing on top of the white water tower, with my back to the sun.

Is it possible to love and hate authors at the same time? Because when I turned the last page on this one, that’s exactly how I felt about Ms. Garcia and Ms. Stohl. They wrote another completely fantastic book – even better than book two! – and then ended with a total cliff-hanger. I mean, jaw-dropping, “No. they. did. not!” type of ending. And I have to wait a year for the next book! Aaaarrrrggggghhhhhh…………

I love these mini-reviews. I should do a few in this manner, but I tend to have a hard time keeping my thoughts concise.

I have just finished reading Linger, and will move on to Forever (my daughter is reading it right now). I am always up for more graphic novels, especially if they are good. Will check out Fables.

I had the first book to Beautiful Chaos, but could not get into it so I gave it away. Maybe one day I will attempt to read it again…there is the library. ;)

Ibeeg – the library’s good that way! My husband laughs at me, because I’ve actually bought books at the library sale that I donated FOR the library sale – but changed my mind and wanted my own copies after all. :)

I have Shiver loaded on audio, and maybe the second one too? Haven’t started them yet, but I’m gearing up for it. I’m going to listen to them all at once. So glad to hear they are well-narrated. As far as the Beautiful Creatures series, I have yet to start them, but they are on my list. I have been warned…take my time because I can’t handle cliff-hangers like that!

I really need to start some of these series…I just have a hard time putting YA at the top of my TBR. I need to get over that ;p

I loved the Shiver trilogy too. I only listened to the first one, read the other two in print, but I did love the audio. I agree about the ending – I’m choosing to believe it ended how I wanted it to. :)

Heather – I still would love to read more about the characters, but the author hasn’t indicated any intention to take the series farther. Oh, well, I can still imagine the happy ending in my head!
