The Sunday Salon – December 18, 2011 (the “Christmas break has officially begun” edition)

We have officially started our Christmas break – three whole weeks of no homeschooling! I was counting on this week being hectic, as I was in charge of our church’s Christmas night service, but that’s not happening now. We moved into a new building this weekend, in spite of it not being quite ready, in order to avoid another exorbitant lease payment at the old place. The guys – and some of the ladies – have been working like crazy the last few weeks, sheetrocking, plumbing, wiring, painting, etc. – but it isn’t quite ready for us to be in there for services. So today, we will be in a banquet room in the restaurant adjoining our new building, and we should be able to start the New Year in our new sanctuary.

Long story short, I no longer have to worry about rehearsals this week. I am singing at my parents’ church on Christmas Eve, but that doesn’t require any organized practice time. This week will be spent doing fun things: decorating Christmas cookies at Mom and Dad’s tomorrow, playing games and watching movies with the kids, and lots of reading – culminating with Christmas Eve and Day at my folks’ house. I can’t imagine I will be posting a Sunday Salon next Sunday, as I will be going unplugged for the holiday.

Here are the books I’m reading for my break:

In print:
~ Dust and Decay by Jonathan Maberry
~ The Annotated Persuasion by Jane Austen
~ Tipperary by Frank Delaney
~ That Distant Land: The Collected Stories by Wendell Berry

On audio:
~ V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton
~ Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern

Do you have any plans for the holidays – reading or otherwise?

  5. Plans for the holidays: mainly, my wife is taking me to my parents (about an hour and half away) for Christmas on Friday. She’ll stay on Friday into Christmas Eve, but then has to work both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. At least, we get to see each other at the start of the weekend, and then I’ll be stuck (the horror! the horror!) with my parents, my aunt (who lives with them) and my sister, brother-in-law and 5-year-old nephew for Christmas. ;) As for reading, I don’t have any plans. I’ll play it by ear.

Bryan – sounds like a fun holiday – except for the fact your wife has to work – that would stink. Hope you do get some time to read or do other things you enjoy!

I am unplugging later this week too. Why knock myself out? It has been a little quiet even now. Fixing up a sanctuary is alot of work to happen over the holidays! Good luck on that, and have a wonderful, musical holiday!

You’re the second person to mention being unplugged for a little while this holiday season. I’m really thinking about doing the same thing. My plans for the holidays is to read as much as possible, make a great dinner, and just relax. :-) Have a great Christmas.

I just plan to do some reading, which I feel like I hadn’t had much of a chance to do these last couple of months. I love the holidays, so it is nice just to be home with my family. I hope you enjoy yours.
