DVD Review: The Muppets

Muppet domination continues with a hilarious new movie from Walt Disney Studios. Jason Segel, Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper join everyone’s favorite Muppets and an all-star celebrity cast in a comic adventure for the whole family.

While on vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary, and friend Mary uncover the diabolical plot of a greedy oil millionaire to destroy the Muppet Theater. Now, the Muppet-loving trio must reunite Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and their friends to stage the greatest Muppet telethon ever and save their beloved theater. The gang is back together again in a must-own movie full of irresistible music and family fun.

Many of us of a certain age have fond memories of watching The Muppet Show. “It’s time to start the music, it’s time to light the lights…” I remember watching it with my family, seeing stars like Steve Martin, Ruth Buzzy, Rich Little – these were stars I never would have heard of at that age, if it weren’t for The Muppet Show. When the show was released on DVD a few years back, I watched episodes with my kids, and they said things like, “Is that the guy from Father of the Bride?”

When I heard that a new Muppets movie was being produced, I honestly had no desire to see it. My memories of the TV show and earlier movies are so wrapped up in my childhood that I just wanted to keep them the way they were and not take a chance of tarnishing them. My mom took all three boys to see it in the theater, but I stayed home. Fortunately, my mom told me that she really enjoyed it, and I remembered that when I was offered a DVD copy to review.

Jason Segel, who pitched the idea for the film to Disney, and then co-wrote the script, must have the same nostalgic fondness for the original show, because this movie is like a love letter to The Muppet Show. It is full of in-jokes, references, and characters that we all know and love. And the music! The music is fantastic, and the whole family was singing “I’m a Man; I’m a Muppet!” for days after we finished the movie. This is the best type of film for family movie night – there is something for the everyone.

The Muppets is available now on DVD. The Three-Disc Wocka Wocka Value Pack includes a Blu-ray copy, a DVD copy, digital copy, and a coupon for a free download of the movie soundtrack. The special features include:

~ “Scratching the Surface: A Hasty Examination of the Making of The Muppets:” A surprisingly shallow but profoundly absurd look at Muppets and humans working together to make cinematic history.
~ Deleted scenes
~ “A Little Screen Test on the Way to the Read-Through:” The Muppets bring the Wocka Wocka Wocka to a routine camera test.
~ “Explaining Evil: The Full Tex Richman Song”
~ Unreleased theatrical spoof trailers
~ Audio commentary
~ Disney intermission – Pause the movie and see what happens!
~ “The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (In Muppet History) We Think:” Includes Muppets! Stars! And one ridiculously long chicken joke! What more do you need?

I like Amy Adams and really enjoyed her singing in the delightful Enchanted. But I’m not a Muppet fan, so I’ve passed this by. But now reading your review, I just might check it out. Also, I hope AA would have some good films coming out … seems like a long while since she’d made one.
