Featuring the voices of the Disney Channel’s Bridgit Mendler and David Henrie and comedic all-stars Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett, and based on the award-winning novel The BorrowersThe Secret World of Arrietty will delight families of all sizes!

I enlisted the boys’ help in writing this review. Noah, who hasn’t read the book, is almost 14. Jonathan is 12 and Josiah is 10, and they both read the book this year.

Noah’s review: I’ve always liked the movies that Studio Ghibli put out, but making one based on an English fantasy book made it all that much better. Five stars.

Jonathan’s review: I love the movies that Ghibli put out, but the fact that it didn’t entirely follow the book, meant I didn’t love it as much as I could have. Four stars.

Josiah’s review: It was okay. I usually put the movies from this studio at four or five stars, but it was kind of strange how it looked like it was from Japan. It wasn’t based very closely on the book, and it wasn’t the way I imagined it from the book. I might have liked it better if I hadn’t read the book. Three stars.

The Secret World of Arrietty is available now on Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo. The special features include the following: the original Japanese storyboards; “Arrietty’s Song” Cecile Corbel Music Video; the original Japanese trailers and TV spots; “Summertime” Bridgit Mendler Music Video; and “The Making of ‘Summertime.’”

We love just about anything that Studio Ghibli puts out…seriously we own them all. We find them magical, and they always have strong female characters. We saw this one in the theater, and while it was less edgy than some, it was enchanting and we left feeling happy. I’m thinking that one of these days, I need to do a feature on all things Ghibli.

I love how the boys helped with the review – and how they all had a little different opinion. That is so great! It looks good, I have never heard of it.

Sheila – I get offered a lot of kids’ movies to review, and the deal is that if I accept them, they have to help with the review. Because of that, they’ve gotten choosy about which ones they will accept!

I love that you got all of your sons’ opinions. The movie sounds like it’s worth watching, even if it isn’t as good as the book. Of course, movies rarely are.

  4. lol aw, I just watched this and loved it of course. These movies charm me so much. I never read The Borrowers, though, so maybe that helps. ;)

Amy – I have a feeling they might have liked it better if more time had passed since they read the book. Too recent, I think. :)
