A completely incoherent review of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Title: Gone Girl
Author: Gillian Flynn
Genre: Thriller, mystery
Publisher: Crown Publishers
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Source: Print copy from my personal library
First line: When I think of my wife, I always think of her head.

Okay, so I saw this book mentioned in Entertainment Weekly, and then Sandy started talking about how fantastic it was long before she actually published her review. I ordered it. I had just received my copy when Sandy posted, saying, “Holy mindscrew Batman.” She wasn’t kidding.

I just finished it tonight, reading the last twenty pages or so with my mouth hanging open. I’m not kidding. I was turning pages as fast as I could, thinking very scattered and horrified thoughts that I cannot post here without giving things away. And you really don’t want me to give anything away. You absolutely have to go into this book blind, without spoilers. If you’re reading a review, and it even begins to hint at giving away too much of the plot, click away as fast as you can. You’ll be glad you did.

To give you just a taste of what it is like to read this book, here are some of the thoughts I had while reading:

“Nick is a despicable person.”

“Poor Amy.”

“Amy is horrible!”

“Poor Nick.”

“What the heck? No way!”

“Oh, I see where this is going.”

“I did NOT expect that.”

“Ew. Just…. ew.”

“Okay, he’s going to (fill in the blank).”

“No…. wait! What? There’s no way…. Oh. My. Gosh.”

The End

Ok. Must get this book. I wish I would have known this yesterday, I would have looked for it at Barnes and Noble. 🙂 Awesome review Carrie!

I think if you only read one book this year, this is the book. It’s so inventive.- a great read for book clubs. How crazy is Amy and is Nick all there? I tell everyone to read this book. Move over Fifty Shades of Grey!

Barbara – and this one is extremely well-written, and I’ve heard 50 Shades is total drivel.

I finished GONE GIRL five days ago and your review explains why I haven’t been able to write anything coherent yet. Every time you think you know where the story is going, it isn’t. I have added both Gillian Flynn’s earlier books to my ‘to read’ list: DARK PLACES, SHARP OBJECTS (two more disturbing titles!

Ann – I know – it continually surprised me at every turn. The best kind of thriller!

  4. Is Gone Girl connected to her earlier books? Your review makes me want to drop everything and read it right now, but I would prefer to read the earlier books first if its a series. I love it when a book makes me crazy like this one did you.

Wendy – I don’t know about her other books, but this one is a stand-alone – you don’t have to wait to read it. 🙂

Melissa – I know! I was so glad I had cut down on review commitments so I could read this one as soon as it came.

V – thanks! There’s really not a good way to review a book like this one – it left me speechless. 🙂

  8. I’m waiting for a copy to come in at the library. I’m trying to be patient. 😉

  9. Kerry says:

I am #10 of 260+ people waiting on the library hold list. They increased the number of copies they ordered TWICE. Her first 2 books were also excellent reads. I am thrilled that she is having so much success with this new novel and hit the bestseller list, and that it seems to have come out of nowhere for her. Although I am also really, really impatient to get my hands on it.

Kerry – wow, that’s some hold list! I hope you don’t have to wait too long.

  10. Love how your enthusiasm for this book shines through this review, even though you don’t tell us much of anything about it (which I realize was the point)! However, I must admit that I’m too chicken to read her books… (Or maybe I should say that her books sound way too scary for the likes of me!)

      says:

Avis – I’ve always thought her books sounded too scary, too. This one is very sinister in tone, but it isn’t gruesome – it didn’t keep me up nights, unless I was reading it, of course. 🙂

*high claps all-around* Brava! That’s exactly how I felt. What an incredible book, knocked me off my feet.

If you haven’t read her debut Sharp Objects, you definitely should. Will keep you up late at night.

Natalie – I am definitely anxious to dip into her back list!

  12. Kathleen says:

I can’t wait to read this one. I rushed out to the bookstore to buy this one after I read taht review by Sandy and that got stuck reading other things. I know I am going to LOVE this one and can’t wait to go on the reading rollercoaster ride!

      says:

Kathleen – you should drop everything and read it now! Only make sure your schedule is clear, cause you won’t want to put it down!
