The Sunday Salon – January 6, 2013

sundaysalon2We had a fantastic week, enjoying every single minute of the last week of our homeschooling vacation. I’m not sure if I can remember what we did every single day, but here are the highlights:

~ Les Miserables was amazing! It wasn’t perfect (Russell Crowe, I’m looking at you), but it was as good as I had hoped. The rest of the casting was perfect, the acting was amazing, and I bawled my eyes out, as I expected to.

~ New Year’s Eve we went to a party at church and played board games, pool, air hockey, foosball, etc. The whole family had fun.

~ New Year’s Day was low-key, and then in the evening some friends came over to play Wii Bowling and Frisbee Golf.

~ On Thursday, Dad and I watched The Raven, which was deliciously creepy. I love John Cusack.

~ Friday, we spent the afternoon at Michelle’s, and then played cards in the evening.

~ Tonight, (I’m writing this Saturday evening), Kevin has friends coming over to play on the Wii again. I may play, too, or I may sit and read, depending on my mood.

Tomorrow will be our last day of vacation. Sigh. I’m not ready to get back into the routine of things, but I know the holidays can’t last forever. I’m looking forward to what 2013 has in store for us. I admit that 2012 is one year I’m happy to see the back end of, but things are looking up. Kevin has a very strong job prospect, so prayers would be appreciated! Hopefully, by next Sunday, I’ll have some very good news.

The Seahwaks are playing in the playoffs tomorrow, so after church, I will be cheering them on. I may do some reading, too, from My Antonia by Willa Cather (our “I’ve Always Meant to Read This Book!” Challenge pick for January); The Map of the Sky by Felix J. Palma; Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery; and The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin. My current audiobook is Dirty Blonde by Lisa Scottoline.

Are you watching football today? Reading anything good?

Totally agree, Russell Crowe didn’t do such a good job with the singing portion of Les Miserables but his acting was great and the rest of the cast was awesome. I was worried that they weren’t going to pull it off.

    Have a great week.

Well, I’ll keep that in mind about Russell Crowe, whom I normally like. But I guess it was his singing or lack of singing?

We’re on the fence about Les Mis — but I know we’ll break down and see it in the theater.

  4. It sounds like a great week for you! I needed a mindless book so I’m reading something by James Patterson.

I’m going to be picking my daughter up here in a half hour from her animal shelter duties, and then the kids, my mom and I will be going to see something. Les Mis? The Impossible? Silver Linings Playbook? One of those probably. My husband and my dad are not going, so it might be wise for us to see Les Mis because they would be bored to tears. So glad you had a great holiday and that your husband has a job prospect. I’m thinking positive thoughts for you!

Today I’m just enjoying our last day of break before everything starts back tomorrow. I’m going to do a little shopping and continue reading Far From the Tree by Andrew Solomon. Enjoy the rest of your day. :-)

I love Kathy’s comment, ” I needed something mindless…” Sounds like all good things must come back to “back to school” Keep well and best of luck to Kevin. Keep up your spirits, it looks good on you.

I had not realized that you’re a fellow homeschooler! (I just started reading after joining the essay challenge.) Yeah, I don’t want to start back up at all. I need at least another week off. Instead we are doing a day-long pioneer re-enactment. I am not feeling the love. (I do love homeschooling! Just not pioneer day.)

Oh definitely watching football. Redskins vs. Seahawks should be a really good game. (I lived in the DC area 15 years but also lived 3 years in Seattle so I can see the draw of both teams, though the Broncos are my true team). You will like My Antonia — that’s a good one! enjoy

  12. I really need to keep track of the movies coming out I want to see. I end up completely forgetting about them. Like the Raven. Hubby has a day off in a couple of weeks and we hope to see Les Miserables. I didn’t think I’d get to see it in the theater, so fingers crossed it will still be showing then. I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be given how popular it is. I hope you are having a great week!

I went to see Les Mis while I was away and really enjoyed it. Russell Crowe was always going to be an issue for me because I just don’t like him, but everything else was so good I could ignore him!
