The Sunday Salon – January 19, 2014

sundaysalon2Time: Saturday evening, 6:08 p.m. – watching the SAG Awards

Thankful for: A Saturday with no obligations. I slept in, got some stuff done that has been languishing on my to-do list for a while, and watched Prisoners. Wow! What a film – the twists kept me guessing, and acting was brilliant. Hugh Jackman is more than just a pretty face, people!

Looking forward to: Watching the NFC Championship game this afternoon – go ‘Hawks! And I’m thankful for the fact that, win or lose, we have a quarterback who has a lot of class. Also, Family Movie Night tonight, but I have no idea what movie Noah is going to pick. It was his turn last week, too – he was the last name drawn in that round, and the first name drawn in this one, so he gets to pick two weeks in a row. I’m hoping he picks something better than what we watched last week: Pacific Rim. It’s only saving grace was that the male cast members were fun to look at.

Reading: I’m still reading the same three books (A Different Sun, A Star for Mrs. Blake, and Flannery O’Connor’s The Complete Stories). Sigh. It hasn’t been a great reading month so far this year. One of the reasons is my new iPod, a late Christmas present from Kevin. I’m a bit addicted to how easy it is to check Facebook, reply to e-mails, and get lost in games like Word Wall. Plus, I’ve been busy working on stuff for Royal Family Kids Camp this summer. I’m also really behind Noah in our Lord of the Rings reading. Fortunately, he is very forgiving.

Listening to: The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult and The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (just starting this one today)

Recently finished listening to: What We Lost in the Dark by Jacquelyn Mitchard (review coming soon)

Blogging recently:
~ Adding to my TBR list – Bookmarks January/February 2014
~ Mini-reviews: After Her by Joyce Maynard and Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield

What are you doing today? Watching the football championships?

Yay for iPods! It is amazing how addictive they are. Even my dad, who just got one and is his first smart phone, instantly got it. Cracks me up when I get texts from him. My print reading has been pretty slow. I’m either running around and listening to audio, or watching a movie (I’ve seen some good ones lately!). I chuckled at your comment about Pacific Rim…glad I didn’t have to sit through that one. I’ll cross my fingers he picks a better one tonight!

Sandy – it was only slightly better – the second Percy Jackson movie. Although it wasn’t Noah’s pick -he couldn’t find anything he wanted to watch that was short enough to fit into an abbreviated movie night after the Seahawks game, so he traded his turn with Josiah, age 12, who received the Percy Jackson DVD for Christmas. 🙂

  2. Nope. No football here. Reading, though. Don’t know what yet…hope you can find a better movie too. My wife and I made it about 10 minutes into Pacific Rim, which was about 10 minutes too long. 😉

  3. M Light says:

Paul just turned 15, and he picked Pacific Rim for his birthday movie. We haven’t watched it yet because of all the rehearsals for Les Mis (and going to see Frozen on Friday) so we’ll probably watch it next weekend.

  4. Michelle says:

Yay for Wisconsin alum Russell Wilson!!! He is without a doubt one of my favorite young quarterbacks, much better than the 49ers one. For that reason, I’m behind the ‘Hawks 100 percent today.

Have a great and lazy Sunday!

It’s been a slow reading week for me too, I’m reading a true story of a fallen soldier, and it’s sad, and I cry, so reading while on public transit is not a good thing. Glad you got to sleep in. Take it easy.

A Star for Mrs. Blake sounds excellent – I have added it to my “to read” list!

We seen Prisoners a couple weeks ago and yeah right? I still need to write a post on that one. Glad you had a little down time on Saturday!

I’ll be curious about your thoughts on What We Lost in the Dark. I finished it yesterday in audio.

Candace – it was engrossing and creepy, but I had a few issues with the writing. Hoping to write the review today.

I have to admit I only use my iPod to listen to audiobooks… I played with it a bit when I first got it, but now it is all about Audible. I turn the internet off unless I want to use it so my battery last longer.

Kelly – I did just join Audible, but I still have some other audiobooks on my computer that I use my old little MP3 player for. Looking forward to using my Audible account for some of the titles my library doesn’t get.

  11. Pacific Rim was so boring, right?

and lol, I love Russell Wilson but how about Sherman? tbh I was laughing, but I know if I’d been rooting for the 49ers I would have been annoyed. Oh sports, never change.

Amy – oh, he was off his rocker. Celebrating, that’s for sure – and he’s always good for a sound bite!
