The Sunday Salon – June 15, 2014 (and a wee blogging break)

sundaysalon2Time: 5:35 p.m., Saturday evening. Writing a quick Sunday Salon post before Kevin takes me out to Chinese food. I’m in desperate need of a date night.

The latest – bullet points edition:

~ We finished our school year – Woo Hoo!

~ We celebrated Noah’s 16th birthday this afternoon. His birthday is Thursday, but we’ll be at camp, so we celebrated early.

~ Camp starts Monday – thus the wee blogging break. (If you missed last Sunday’s post and don’t know what I’m talking about, you can read up here.) I haven’t had any time to write posts to publish while I’m gone, so the blog will be silent. I don’t even know if I’ll have time to read this week – although I know I’ll at least get audio time as I drive back and forth, since I’m not sleeping over at camp. I’m hoping I’ll find time to write a Sunday Salon post next Sunday so I can tell you all how it went.

Reading: A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving (I had no idea this was going to be so funny!); The Catch by Taylor Stevens (this latest installment in the Vanessa Michael Munrose series got off to a bit of a slow start for me, but now I’m hooked); and Dreaming for Freud by Sheila Kohler (just started this one)

Just finished reading: The Three by Sarah Lotz

Watching: We watched Crimson Tide last week, which everyone enjoyed, but we won’t be having movie night tonight. Dad and Natalie have to be at camp this evening, so we’ll wait until next week to watch Josiah’s pick, The Lego Movie. Some of our favorite summer series are coming back, too: Major Crimes, Rizzoli and Isles, Perception, Falling Skies. Plus, I’m excited to try two new sci fi series: The Last Ship and Extant.

Blogging recently:
~ Book Review: The Moon Sisters by Therese Walsh
~ Kickstarter Project: The Gloaming

I hope you are all enjoying your summer! If you’re the praying type, I would appreciate prayers for camp this week – and especially for good weather. :)

I know this may sound strange but I am not American so will ask anyway. What does one do at camp? And why is it so important?

Mystica – This is a camp specifically for children who come out of abuse and are placed in the foster care system. The kids do arts and crafts, go swimming, go fishing, do woodworking, put on a talent show, have a party, and lots of other fun stuff. If you look at my post from last Sunday, you can find some YouTube videos that have more information.

  2. Enjoy camp. :)

I’m glad you’re enjoying A Prayer for Owen Meany. It is one of my all-time favorites (which I’ve probably mentioned before).

We still haven’t seen The Lego Movie, but hopefully soon….

Have fun on your break! I have the next Vanessa Michael Munrose on my wish list. I’ll remember that it has a slow start and won’t give up.

Candace – It has definitely picked up. I still don’t feel as enthralled as when I read books one and two, but I’m still in love with the character.

I really want to read The Three. I’m told I need to read it when I’m flying somewhere, so I think I will have it in hand when we go to Indiana in July (heh heh). I’m curious about Taylor’s latest. The last one The Doll was just OK for me. I was actually kinda ready for it to end. I hope that is not a trend that will continue because I do like her books.

Sandy – I don’t think reading The Three while flying is a very good idea at all! lol

Have fun with all that driving! I hope to start The Catch next week :)

Congrats to Noah! Don’t take TOO long a break!

I did actually start reading the Three while on a plane to New York. Occasionally I would peek at the person next to me to make sure they could not see I was reading about planes crashing.. :) I need to finish that book. Have an awesome time camping!

Sheila – I am glad you protected your seatmate – he or she might have questioned your state of mind!
