First line: I can be so, so quiet.

I love this series on audio. The readers for the four main characters were perfect. The resolution of this series was a bit ambiguous, but I think I know where the author was going, and I’m choosing to believe in the ending I wanted. And I really enjoyed the way the characters of Cole and Isabel were developed, the way their relationship unfolded. In fact, I’d love to see a spin-off series focusing on the two of them.

First line: Once upon a time.

What a fun premise for a series! Fable characters have come to live in the mundane world after their homelands were taken over by a mysterious enemy. In this first volume, Snow White, who runs things, must depend on Bigby Wolf, her chief detective, to solve the murder of her sister, Rose Red. Great art, too, even if the women do embody the comic-book idea of perfection – tiny waists, huge boobs. Definitely not one for the kiddies, but a lot of fun anyway.

Is it possible to love and hate authors at the same time? Because when I turned the last page on this one, that’s exactly how I felt about Ms. Garcia and Ms. Stohl. They wrote another completely fantastic book – even better than book two! – and then ended with a total cliff-hanger. I mean, jaw-dropping, “No. they. did. not!” type of ending. And I have to wait a year for the next book! Aaaarrrrggggghhhhhh…………

Author: Aron Warner
Genre: Graphic novel
Publisher: Sea Lion Books
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Source: E-book for review from the publisher
First line: Akron, Ohion. October 2nd. 2025.

Publisher blurb: Brent Marks is not a freak. He’s one of the “Pariah”, a group of teens who become extremely intelligent after being cured of a genetic disorder. Although in most ways a normal teen, Brent is considered dangerous and is tracked down by the government who see these kids as an enormous threat.

They’re not super powered, they’re just super smart. The teen protagonists who lead us through the world of Pariah, a twelve-book graphic novel series from the mind of Oscar-winning film producer Aron Warner and published by Sea Lion Books, are the next generation of heroes in the comic book world. Eisner-nominated illustrator Brett Weldele (The Surrogates) will bring the stories to life in ink, and Philip Gelatt will pen the scripts set in Warner’s world for the twelve books.

The Vitros, as the characters are called, are a group of several hundred kids from all over the world who possess beyond-human intelligence produced via genetic manipulation. As teenagers in the process of trying to uncover their identities, they live relatively normal lives, though not without a fair amount of suspicion thrown at them from the fringes of society. When the Vitros are framed for a deadly explosion at a laboratory that releases a virus on the population, the government systematically begins to round up these pariahs, sending our heroes on the run from the authorities and their lives.

One of my goals this year is to read more graphic novels. When I was offered an e-book preview of the upcoming graphic novel, Pariah, Vol. 1, I jumped at a chance to work on that goal. Although this first installment in the series is far from perfect, it is an exciting beginning, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

I love the idea behind Pariah, and the future it envisions is an intriguing one. I would have liked a little more world-building and background on who – and what – the Vitros are. On the other hand, the story does jump right into the action, and I was drawn into the story. I guess it’s the nature of comic books, but just when I was really rolling with the story, excited to see what happens next, it was over. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for Volume 2.

Author: Alissa Torres and Sungyoon Choi
Genre: Graphic memoir
Publisher: Villard
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Source: Print copy from the public library
First line: The world trade center was just hit by a plane!

American Widow is a graphic memoir telling of Ms. Torres’s experience after losing her husband in the World Trade Towers on 9/11. He started working for Cantor Fitzgerald on September 10th. On September 11th, he died.

Ms. Torres’s story is heartbreaking, extremely well-told, and important for people to know. She speaks of the struggle to get financial help after 9/11, in spite of the fact that millions of dollars of charity were flooding into organizations like the Red Cross. She tells about the pain she felt when people started turning against some of the 9/11 widows in the press, vilifying them and accusing them of trying to profit from their husbands’ deaths. Most of all, she tells about her grief and the enormous effort it took for her to continue on with her life.

Sungyoon Choi’s art fits this story perfectly. It is simple and moves the story along. Some of the panels of Ms. Torres sitting alone or lying alone in bed are particularly poignant.

In my opinion, there is one weakness in this book. Ms. Torres speaks of being angry with her husband the day before 9/11, and still angry when she saw him off to work on the morning of the devastation. I never understood what she was angry about. I’m not sure if the weakness lies in the art or in the words, but I am still a little confused on that point. Still, that’s a minor quibble with what is otherwise a brilliant book.

This is a re-post of a review I wrote a couple of years ago.

Author: A.S. Peterson
Genre: Historical fiction
Publisher: Rabbit Room Press
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Source: Print copy from my personal library
First line: The trouble with Phineas Michael Button began the moment she was born.

The Fiddler’s Gun is an engaging piece of historical fiction with a terrific protagonist. Fin Button was raised in an orphanage during the years leading up to the American Revolution. When circumstances conspire to put her on the run, she becomes a privateer, hoping that when the war is over, she can return and marry the man she loves. I enjoyed reading about Fin’s adventures. Peterson has a wonderful gift for putting the reader right into the world of the book and keeping them there through adventure after adventure, all the while dealing with some of the heavier issues of faith, forgiveness, and free will. I will definitely be looking for the sequel.

First line: She was glad it was the evening mailboat she was taking, for she did not think she could have faced a morning departure.

I was about to put the audiobook version of The Silver Swan onto my MP3 player when I discovered that it was the sequel to this book, Christine Falls. Being obsessive-compulsive about reading series in order, I put the print copy of this one on hold and read it last week while in the hospital with Natalie. The mystery wasn’t a huge one – not difficult to imagine what was going on – but what makes this book so readable is its characters. Quirke, the emotionally damaged, hard-drinking pathologist; Sarah, the woman he loves – who just happens to be married to his adoptive brother, Malachy; Mal and Sarah’s daughter Phoebe, who is a grown woman and yet unable to make her own decisions. I really do love a good British literary mystery, and this one ranks up there with the Adam Dalgliesh mysteries by P.D. James. I can’t wait to listen to The Silver Swan.

First line: Whenever my father went out of town, he had the mail stopped.

I have read some graphic memoirs that I absolutely loved: Blankets, Maus, Persepolis – and some that I didn’t love as much, and, unfortunately, this one falls into the latter category. I do like Sandell’s writing style and the art is terrific, but I wish she left a bit more to the imagination when it came to the sex in the book. I was a bit afraid to read it when my boys were in the room, for fear of having them walk up and look over my shoulder only to see two naked people going at it. I guess I just prefer the books I read – especially if they include pictures! – to err on the side of subtlety when it comes to sexual content.

First line: I’m seeing you again after twenty-seven years, Mother, and wondering whether in all that time you have understood how much damage you did to your children.

I put Let Me Go on my list of audiobooks to listen to after reading Sandy‘s review. This memoir is the story of Helga Schneider’s last meeting with her mother. After an estrangement of over twenty years, Helga has come to Vienna to visit her mother in a nursing home, hoping to find some answers for her childhood and her mother’s choices. Her mother abandoned her family when Helga was a child in order to devote her entire self to the Nazi Party. As a member of the SS, she worked as a guard at two of the worst concentration camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Ravensbruck. Helga struggles between a daughter’s desire to have a relationship with her mother and the extreme revulsion she feels for what her mother did for the SS and the hatred for the Jews that she still holds firmly.

Listening to this audiobook was an eerie, chilling experience. I thought about giving it a full review, but Sandy already did such a wonderful job, that I simply point you to hers.

First line: I had always imagined that my life story, if and when I wrote it, would have a great first line: something lyric like Nabokov’s “Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins”; or if I could not do lyric, then something sweeping like Tolstoy’s “All happy families are alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Firmin is a rat who began life in a shredded copy of Finnegan’s Wake, and lives most of his life in a bookstore. His isn’t a very happy life, being a rat, but he has the ability to read and longs to be human. This is a book for book-lovers and also anyone who is sad at the loss of historic neighborhoods, as Firmin’s home was in Scollay Square, a vibrant section of Boston that became impoverished and was eventually doomed to destruction for the sake of development.

First line: During January of 2007, my mother and I lived in a small rental apartment in Paris in order to celebrate my mother’s turning fifty (and my turning twenty-two).

I loved the art in this memoir of Ms. Knisley’s trip to Paris with her mother, but I didn’t love the story as much as some other bloggers have. It’s probably my age and the fact that I’ve never been privileged to travel to Europe, but I kept wanting to tell Lucy to snap out of her self-focus and anxiety and enjoy the fact that she was in Paris! She is definitely a talented cartoonist, though, and I look forward to her next book.

First line: The mice struggle to live safely and prosper among all of the world’s harsh conditions and predators.

My boys have been after me to read the Mouse Guard books for a while. First of all, the art is absolutely gorgeous. This is the kind of graphic novel I love, where the art is perfectly matched to the story and characters. Saxon, Kenzie, and Lieam are fierce members of the Mouse Guard, determined to stop the traitor leading a revolt against the Guard. The story is only just beginning, though, and I look forward to reading Winter: 1152 and any further adventures of the Mouse Guard. You can see examples of the artwork at David Petersen’s site.

Author: John Marsden
Genre: YA dystopian fiction
Publisher: Scholastic
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
First line: The summer storms are the wildest.

Still reeling from the losses they experienced in the previous books, Ellie, Homer, Fiona, Lee, and Kevin are back in Hell. They were hoping to go back to New Zealand after the failure of their last big mission, but so far are being told to hold tight. Instead of simply sitting around, the gang goes on a scouting mission to see if there is anything else they can do to stop or slow the enemy occupying their country. They end up pulling their biggest mission ever. I love this series! Marsden knows how to write a rip-roaring action-filled page-turner, and yet still realistically deal with the fact that these characters are teenagers who have undergone severe changes because of the things they have seen and done in the war. Each book seems to build upon the last, and I can’t wait to find out how the series ends.

Title: The Night is for Hunting (Book 6, The Tomorrow Series)
First line: It was hot and dusty.

The gang is hiding out in Ellie’s grandmother’s house in Stratton, when they decide to try to help a group of feral kids living on their own in the town. The kids become a huge responsibility, and one that becomes a hindrance to continuing in their resistance efforts. Again Marsden sucked me right in, giving me even more reason to love these characters. Read this series; enough said.

Update: I’m editing the title to indicate that these are books I think everyone must read, not books I’m listing for myself to read. I’ve read – and loved – all of these, that’s why I consider them must-reads. )

I have officially run out of genres in which I can list my favorites. I thought it would be good to do one last “favorites” post, in which I compile all the lists, plus any must-reads I’ve come across since, and any other books I love that didn’t quite fit into one of the lists. This list will continue to grow – for many years, I’m sure. Because of the fact that it would make me insane to try to actually put them in any order of preference, there is no order to this list. I will attempt to separate it into genres, but know that there is often over-lap between genres.

(Aside: How do you determine between contemporary fiction and literary fiction? What about historical fiction – does it matter if it’s literary, too? Does the Outlander series count as historical fiction, or do I have to put it in fantasy because of the time travel element? What about women’s fiction? I get confused by these questions.)
