I am a faithful viewer of Grey’s Anatomy. My recent experiences during Natalie’s hospitalization demonstrated how watching television programs like this create unreal, and oftentimes strange, expectations in their viewers. For instance:

~ None of Natalie’s doctors had nicknames like McDreamy or McSteamy.

~ None of the doctors or nurses gave each other smoldering looks over Natalie’s bed.

~ None of the doctors and nurses discussed their personal life or workplace gossip in front of us.

~ None of the doctors and nurses argued over Natalie’s treatment in front of us.

~ When walking down the hallway, I never came across a doctor and nurse exiting an empty room with lipstick smeared, hair mussed, and clothing askew.

~ I never heard the words “STAT,” “Code Red” or “crash cart” – thank God.

~ Most disappointingly, none of Natalie’s doctors looked like this:

or this:

or this:

or this:

~ Also, when we were walking out after being discharged, there wasn’t a coffeehouse-style song playing over the sound system:

“‘Why am I the only mother whose daughter has a stalker? Isn’t it bad enough my mother is trying to kill the Griever?’”

“‘I think we just have to pick a good bust. Like the old naked guy woulda been okay!’”

“‘It’s a demon monkey!’” yelled Lula. “‘Somebody get a priest!’”

“‘Do you think I should list shoes in the prenup?’”

“I did a ten-second imitation of a cat on roller skates.”

“What can I say? I’m blue and I’m feeling fragile.” (Okay, you might see this in another book, but in Stephanie’s case, she is literally blue.)

“Zook, Mooner, and Gary were back to the world of Minion Fire. The spud guns were lined up along the wall.”

Since I started last night, I’ve already consumed some of my read-a-thon snacks. Around 11 last night I had a cup of coffee and 2 100-calorie chocolate-covered pretzel packs. Yum! Around 1 am I had a piece of string cheese and a banana.

I crashed around 3:45 last night, slept until 10, and then had breakfast with my hubby. I’m just now getting back to my read-a-thon plans. I plan on a latte later on, probably some more chocolate-covered pretzels, possibly a Skinny Cow Skinny Dipper ice cream bar, and for health’s sake, some almonds and apples.

What are you eating for the read-a-thon?
