2012 Essay Challenge

Welcome to the fourth annual Essay Reading Challenge! If you’re an avid essay reader, or just want to expand your reading horizons a bit, this is the challenge for you. If you’re thinking, “What would I read?” – stay tuned: I’ll have a post up with suggestions later in the week.

~ This challenge runs from January 1, 2012 through November 30, 2012.

~ If you read a book of essays, that book can also apply to any other challenges you are working on.

~ Choose a goal of reading 10, 20, or 30 essays, and then write a challenge post, linking back to this post. Feel free to copy and paste the above image into your challenge post.

~ Copy your challenge post’s link into the Mr. Linky below or on the main challenge page.

~ You don’t have to list your essays ahead of time – just have fun reading throughout the year.

~ I will put up a page for the challenge in my header, and add a Mr. Linky for essay reviews and wrap-up posts as the year goes on.

~ Everyone who completes the challenge and writes at least one review will be eligible for the giveaway prize: A copy of Best American Essays 2012.

~ I will put up a wrap-up and giveaway post sometime early in December – that’s why the challenge only runs through November.

I seem to have joined a lot of book challenges this year, but I do a lot of reading, and this should be interesting.

Have been immersed in George Orwell – possibly the first time I’ve read any of his essays (or anything else of his for that matter) since I was at school. I still hate his novels, and have no intention of re-reading them, but his essays are wonderful and deserve a much wider audience.

I’m in! I love essays but never take the time to read them. This is just the encouragement I need. Thanks.

Been reading Charles Lamb’s essay on Roast Pig … very funny (even for a vegetarian like me)… http://booksandmovies.colvilleblogger.com/reading-challenges-im-hosting/2012-essay-reading-challenge/

  7. Book-Handling by the late great Flann O’Brien (aka Myles na Gopaleen, aka Brian O’Nolan)… for everyone who loves old battered books. Originally published in the Irish Times, now available as The Best of Myles, by Flann O’Brien – a collection of newspaper columns, buy they are essays really. http://chriscross-thebooktrunk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/i-want-to-be-book-handlerIri.html

  8. Having problems. No 4 is linked to the wrong post. This should be linked to a post about Book Handling, written by the late great Flann O’Brien (aka Myles na Gopaleen, aka Brian O’Nolan) for his column in the Irish Times, but I think it counts as an essay. It is available in a collection of his work (he wrote about all sorts of things). The Best of Myles, by Flann O’Brien, which is very witty, very satirical, and very funny. He was Irish, so can I use this for the Irish Challenge as well please
